Clash jerseys: an annoying necessity?

It is true that the 2012 pies strip was more like the traditional strip. However, it is only ever worn with the white away shorts and so it falls into the 'all white' thing that most teams are doing these days. It was great to see the pies wearing their traditional strip with black shorts against the lions in their old fiztroy colors during the nab cup. The more 'strange' pies jerseys I was referring to was the one used against north in 2011 and the ones with the logo on the middle stripe back in the 2000-2002 ish days. The old jumpers are the best as far as I'm concerned.

Footy nostalgia ain’t what it used to be

One of the best memories of my childhood (and footy) growing up was walking with Dad up to AFL Park with the hordes of other footy fans in the freezing wind and rain to see whoever was playing (especially the Pies). I loved being able to follow the other games being played throughout the wider Melbourne suburban area using the little section on the main scoreboard at Waverley that would have "A v B" or "K v L" and you'd have to look at your footy record to find out who those teams were and where the game was being played. You'd often see the crowd's attention being drawn to that area of the scoreboard (away from the actual game being played at Waverley) and someone would yell "Go the Saints!" because St Kilda had just kicked a goal against whoever out at Moorabin. The walk home from Waverley would either be a happy one, yahooing and carrying on with your fellow supporters, or a quick and sad one trying to get away from the winning fans. As a much younger man, if the Pies had won at Waverley, once we got home Dad would say "Well, we better make sure they won by watching the replay" which was on before the news on Saturday evening. Similarly, if we lost it would be "Maybe they'll win the replay - let's have a look." Footy has unfortunately lost a fair bit of that suburban tribalism but I guess the modern economics of it all inevitably draw the game into the G and Etihad etc. Having said that, I love every game but I'll always have a special spot for games played between old Victorian rivals on a Saturday afternoon.

Why Malthouse is the right pick

Yep, that's all fair and as a fellow Carlton-hater I do have sympathy for your view. Mick unwelcome though? I don't think it will come to that as far as I'm concerned. Coaching is his trade and whilst it must be true that he is motivated for selfish reasons to a certain extent, wouldn't it be great for footy generally (to draw on your Barrass comment) to see Carlton become a fair dinkum force again? For the avoidance of doubt, yes, I am a Pies fan but more importantly than that, I'm a fan of the game and the contest. Nothing would please me more than to watch the Pies wallop a Mick-led Blues team in full flight. I completely understand why some people will draw the "Coriolanus" comparison but, for me, Leigh Matthews wasn't/isn't detached from the 1990 legacy and I hope it will be the same with Mick with respect to the journey which culminated in 2010/11. Interesting to think about though..... thanks for your thoughts, Richard.
