Hey NF, I agree. I think the NRL should look at building their own Stadium. This is an article I wrote back in 2011. Short term pain would mean a long term gain for the game.
The NRL must fund new stadiums
Sorry but Griffin is a large reason why Broncos are in free fall at the moment. Since Broncos extended his contract in 2012 his record is diabolical, it is UNDER 30%.
Aside from Griffin’s shocking win rate the other most concerning attribute appears to be the lack of player development (players under 25). Aside from Hoffman (who he was playing out of position) no other player has improved over the past 12-18 months.
Players such as Gillett, Reed, Glenn, McGuire should be starting to stamp their authority on games, yet I don’t see it. Take a look at the progression of opposition players such as Fifita and Cordner over the last 12 months. Compare it with our boys and it’s extremely concerning.
Is Neil Henry the answer? I’m not sure, but I know if we continue with Griffin we will be talking about the same thing in 12 months time. Act now, or 2014 will be another wasted season.
Missing finals might benefit us: Broncos
Hey GWS, agree with you. In 2-3 years are new batch of players will be coming through. Players like Anthony Milford (Raiders) and others with brilliant skills. Good times ahead.
Sonny Bill heading to Rio Olympics in 2016?
As a Broncos fan I suggest we continue to support them. With the likes of Parker, Thaiday & Hodges we have good experienced leaders that will help the young talented fellas coming through.
Griffin's Broncos at 26 percent and sliding
Gillett and Glenn combined have missed 90 tackles between them for the Broncos, in comparison, SBW and Cordner combined have missed 50 tackles. Rather then say who should be dropped to the bench, you should be asking why we are missing so many tackles. Broncos success was brought on by strong defence.
As I mentioned Hoffman is among our best for 2013. He was good enough to play fullback in 2012, so why isn’t he afforded the same opportunity this year? We should be looking to develop someone at fullback this year so we can hit the ground running in 2014.

I wrote an article about this in 2011. Sydney needs a boutique stadium, similar to Skilled Park.
Skilled Park seats 27,400 fans, it has 100 open corporate boxes, 25 closed corporate suites, two 450 seat function rooms.
It’s a great rugby league venue, why can’t this model stadium be brought to Sydney.
The next question is where would you place a Skilled Park stadium for Sydney league fans? For me, the next best location is Henson Park.
It’s perfectly located between Stanmore Station (1km walk) and Sydenham Train Station (1km walk).
Who would play at such a venue?
I would place Souths Sydney, Canterbury Bulldogs and the West Tigers at this new venue. It’s within close proximity of all three teams (see below).
– Henson Park to Belmore Oval – 7.8km.
– Henson Park to Leichhardt Oval – 5.3km.
– Henson Park to Redfern Oval – 5.7km.
Mr Gallop, the AFL are currently working with GWS to build a boutique Stadium in the middle of our heartland. You have seen the cards the AFL have drawn, why don’t you raise the stakes and at least attempt to win this hand for rugby league fans in Sydney?
At least give it some consideration, especially as you’re about to inherit $1billion for the next TV rights deal.
Small investment for a long-term gain, I think. I also think you would see a large increase in crowds at game. Let’s face it, it would be a great look for the game and, hey, I might be able to share a try with the fan next to me!
Solving NRL's Sydney stadium dilemmas
Scott,
Out of interest how can you question Peter Nolan ? He’s only recently arrived at the club, he’s in the process of cleaning up the mess that was previoulsy left for him. As a Broncos fan and watching our 17-23 year olds running around I say thanks Peter, great job.
Eels are buying blind and playing blind
Personally I would like to see the NRL invest their own money in a Stadium – A purpose built ‘Boutique Stadium’ that seats 30-35K fans, under a retractable roof.
NRL games in Sydney don’t attract 40K plus fans on a regular basis, what’s the logic in investing in another 50K seat Stadium in Sydney ?
Fans pet hates. Ticket prices. Food and Beverage prices. Sitting outdoors in the rain.
This Stadium would be owned by the NRL. So they could set their own ticket prices, ensure affordable food and beverage prices. Fans would go to games knowing they would be sitting under a retractable roof.
For me, the best location is Henson Park.
It’s perfectly located between Stanmore Station (1km walk) and Sydenham Train Station (1km walk).
You could house Souths Sydney, Canterbury Bulldogs and the West Tigers on a regular basis – It’s within close proximity of all three teams (see below).
– Henson Park to Belmore Oval – 7.8km.
– Henson Park to Leichhardt Oval – 5.3km.
– Henson Park to Redfern Oval – 5.7km.
Dragons may also want to host a few games.
The Titans ground seats 27,400 fans, it has 100 open corporate boxes, 25 closed corporate suites, two 450 seat function rooms. I can’t see how the Sydney version can’t set 35,000 fans and match the same amount of corporate suites that ANZ Stadium currently cater for.
Long term investment knowing they would provide a stadium that would be purpose built for League fans.
My advice regarding the Sydney stadium strategy
