“Obviously, a lot will depend on how well the Tigers do at the next few drafts, but they have traded virtually all their premium picks for the foreseeable future.”
I can foresee 2024. This guy can’t?
Richmond traded two first-rounders and two seconds, for two guarantees – one an A-grader and one B+, in its area of greatest need, in the age bracket it needed to bolster. Its next senior core is Taranto, Hopper, Bolton, Baker, Balta, Short, Rioli, Graham, all aged 23-26, except Short who is 27. Expect it to add to this group in the off-season.
Not all first-round picks are equal. The ‘premium’ picks are the first handful. Richmond paid what ended up being pick 14 (and 23) for Taranto – who went at pick 2 in his draft and has proved worthy of it. That’s a bargain.
Hopper, who was drafted with pick 7, cost Richmond’s 2023 first-rounder and 2022’s pick 35. There is some angst currently that his price tag might end up being too high if Richmond hands over a top-5 pick to GWS, but the pragmatist in Hartley will see it as it is – whatever pick number it ends up being was irrelevant to Richmond as soon as they traded it – for a guaranteed B+ big-bodied midfielder.
Taken together, the price paid for Taranto and Hopper was good business, even if a top-5 pick ends up being involved.
With Cotchin and Riewoldt finishing up this year, Grimes and Prestia not far behind them, Martin’s big contract expiring in 2024 and Lynch’s in 2025, Richmond will have the cap space and the cache to attract fee agents both this year and next. Importantly, it has one of the best list managers in the business in Blair Hartley. Giving him picks to trade is better use than giving them to Matt Clarke to draft with.
It’s a good article even if ‘will Richmond do a Geelong or a Hawthorn’ has been done more than a few timesbefore (note: Hawthorn traded out of drafts for half a decade – Richmond had five top-30 picks in 2021 and three top-25 in 2017) but there are a few things wrong, none more so than saying Richmond took the captaincy off the greatest captain it’s had since Jack Dyer. He handed it back, it was his for life if he wanted it.

The Tigers have arrived at their sliding doors moment

Spot on, WASS.

AFL rule changes to combat defensive play

Plenty of other ways. Call for a ball-up quicker like the old days, rather than waiting 30 seconds for a maul to form. Get in and throw it up immediately, like the old days, rather than wait for ruckmen and 20 others to arrive and defensive zones to set up. Pay ALL free kicks, like the old days. Pay 50s against all delay tactics.

Historical clues to predicting AFL placements in 2020 (Part 1)

Fan fiction.

Jonathon Patton will win the Coleman Medal in 2020

It was rubbish, is what it was.

On the verge of an unlikely dynasty

Gastro.

On the verge of an unlikely dynasty

None of those teams had free agency to extend their windows. Richmond added the best key forward in the game to the best team in the game.

On the verge of an unlikely dynasty

Already declared he will play for no one but Richmond. Very happy and settled in Melbourne. 99 games to go and we’ll have claims on his sons – #2 looks very talented.

On the verge of an unlikely dynasty

Worst opposition. Lol. Pathetic.

On the verge of an unlikely dynasty

If your mate’s son was a Collingwood fan, he’d have had less joy. Want some fries with that salt, ‘guru’?

On the verge of an unlikely dynasty

A bit sick of this ‘charmed run’ nonsense. What premiership team doesn’t have a good run with injuries? Richmond’s medical and fitness departments do a magnificent job – keeping your players fit is part of the art of list management.

Besides, last year they lost the best defender in a generation in Round 1, went extended periods without Riewoldt, Cotchin and others, won interstate without Rance, Riewoldt, Cotchin and Martin, and used more players than almost every other club.

As for ‘didn’t have an opponent’ in the grand final, I don’t recall anyone saying that about Hawthorn in 83 or 88, or Essendon in 85 or 2000, or Geelong in 2007. Some teams are just that much better than the rest, and this Richmond team is one of them.

The petty sniping regarding the Tigers’ talent level (compare Mooney and Nathan Ablett to Riewoldt and Lynch), or luck, or fans, reflects poorly on the commentators. It’s nothing but jealousy and bitterness that their favourite object of scorn for the past few decades is now the pace-setter.

On the verge of an unlikely dynasty

None of West Coast’s income is from gambling? The club plays its home games at Burswood Park!
Gambling isn’t the only industry with a negative societal effect. West Coast’s major partner is a fast food restaurant – hello obesity and diabetes! Its principal partners include two massive mining interests – goodbye environment! And the nation’s biggest brewer – hello, violence!
Get off your high horse.

Collingwood are the victims of their own hype

Top 10 Reasons Collingwood is hated:
1. Won most of their premierships when bankrolled by a criminal.
2. Sent Hooker Harrison out to maim Barassi in 1958.
3. Supporters at Victoria Park throwing urine on opposition players and fans.
4. Disgusting institutionalised racism, resulting in horrific abuse of visiting players.
5. Disgusting racist comments and attitudes of presidents McAlister and McGuire.
6. Lowest common denominator magnet, meaning a greater number of feral, ugly, nasty fans.
7. Get a golden run with the umpires. Constantly at the top of the free kick differential charts.
8. They don’t shut up about themselves. People are sick of hearing about them.
9. Their president uses his conflict of interest position in the media to push his club’s barrow at every opportunity.
10. Why not?

Having said that, I would still support Collingwood in a grand final against Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn or Geelong.

Collingwood are the victims of their own hype

Just need gastro to go through the club in the wrong week and a season of dominance can be undone, as we saw last year with the Tigers.

There's only one AFL team we can trust with seven rounds in the books

Oh. Don, you poor deluded soul. Bennell has never been close to top 10 in the league, is nowhere near as good, consistent, reliable or drug-free as Cotchin, and hasn’t played for 3 years. You might as well claim to be missing Pav.

Richmond, missing 3 players better than anyone on Freo’s list bar Fyfe, missing Vlastuin and Rioli as well, losing their ruckman and a midfielder before half time, still dominated your sorry mob of Fyfe and a bunch of state leaguers.

Richmond’s depth was on show: super-talented youngsters Bolton, Stack, Balta, Menadue, Baker; while Freo’s lack of depth was exposed when you recruited Conca, Colyer and co and they walked into your best 22.

At least you can confidently plan your September holidays.

What a miserable life you must have, Peter.

For Tiger fans, 35 years of pain is gone

Oh, hey Geoff. Man, I’m spitting chips I cost the Tigers a flag. My poor head! 😀

For Tiger fans, 35 years of pain is gone

Nope, not content. Just no longer miserable. Also, how supporters feel has absolutely nothing to do with how the team plays.
