Victoria is Australia's sporting capital
Sorry mate. Maxwell may as well write this season off. The poor bloke is stuffed. He could do with a fishing holiday.
In any case, going on last year’s aggregates, who does he deserve to leap frog out of Carters, Cooper, Lynn, Silk, Burns, Henriques, Khawaja or even Ferguson, Dunk, Pomersbach, Stoinis or Maddinson? If you’re fair dinkum you’ll say none of them. Then this season you’ve got Bancroft and even Ed Cowan banging the door down.
Style over substance is not my bag, Bearfax. However, I will say that I have been a long time fan of both Smith and Warner. They were too supremely talented, each with great game awareness not to make it and cricket nouse can’t be taught. While your man Glenn (I was going to call him Big Glenn but have realised he’s shorter than me) obviously has plenty of the former he is blessed with none of the latter.
Too little, too late from Australia's ageing cricketers
I was keen to climb into you about much of your article until I read your proposed solutions. Come on. Please.
Harris and Johnson are on their way out? They are both in the top 5 ICC ranked Test bowlers and at the top of their games. Rogers has just peeled off five 50s on the trot and is ranked on equal points as Alastair Cook in the ICC batting rankings. And the the doozy ….. “Maxwell (is) surely pushing for a batting place.” You have seen big Glenn bat lately? The poor bugger is fried.
Sorry, Chris, but this piece is way off the mark. Until any of the kids start banging the door down with 1000 run domestic seasons or 40-50 wickets a season they can wait until they do. Like so may of the old farts have done in the past.
Too little, too late from Australia's ageing cricketers
Your whining about “old codgers” yet you want to replace one with 32 and a half year old Eddie Cowan. Turn it up! As soon as some of the kids start pumping out 1000 runs in a domestic season then they should be seriously looked at, just as Hussey, M. Waugh, Hayden, Elliott, Martyn, Langer, etc had to do.
Too little, too late from Australia's ageing cricketers
Not sure we need any more allrounders. Johnson has legitimate claims to that title while Haddin’s batting makes him effectively one also.
A genuine top order bat who can slot in at 3, is adaptable and go through the gears is more important than what Watson offers. Shane is not willing to make ugly runs and therefore has never had a mortgage on first drop.
Drop Shane Watson? For who, exactly?
It seems in the modern climate, regardless of the sport, you can’t be considered worthy of holding your position in your team unless you are as fit as a fiddle. It’s understandable to a degree as the athlete can’t contribute in many sports should their body fail them. But cricket’s a different kettle of fish. Particularly with the stick.
As Jack Nicklaus said, “Golf is 80% mental, 10% ablility, 10% luck.” The wounded batsman is much the same. Think Steve Waugh at The Oval, 2001. Gordon Greenidge at Lord’s, 1984. Dean Jones at Madras, 1986. “Beware the injured batsman”.
Surely Michael Clarke has the runs on the board. If he says he’s right to go then his ticker will get him across the line. A 50% fit Clarke is a better option than most other options.
Do yourself a favour and have a read of Jarrod Kimber’s superb look at the 100.
Clarke is finished, Clarke is king, Clarke is a Martian
I really hope you’re off the mark, @Ronanoco. But I fear he’s bowled himself into the ground like an old stayer that’s run one too many Melbourne Cups.
Is Ryan Harris' Test career over?
Smith clearly next skipper for mine.
Will Steve Smith follow Michael Clarke as Test captain?
The NFL, etc in the US deliver players and coaches to the media on demand, no questions asked. It is incumbant upon any AFL club representative to make themselves available whether they like it or not. Mick needs to grow up in a hurry. He acknowledged that this week.
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
Sounds fantastic. Got your phone booth booked? You won’t need much room, Peter.
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
He is a Collingwood premiership coach so, being a lifelong fan, I’ll never have it in for him. His rudeness is disgraceful, you’d have to agree. As far as going to Carlton out of spite, you would be clearly in the minority if you didn’t agree with that. Clearly.
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
I for one love to see Mick losing his s**t live. Why wait? It’s gold, Jerry. Gold!
It's time for Mick to call it a day
Agenda, Darren? I don’t follow. Please tell me where I am wrong in any way. I’d love to hear it.
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
Lingy may well have shown them the way. I’d hope they do show some pills. It’s like calling a surgeon “Mister ……”. Stuff that. We’re Australian. No one is better than anyone else. Including cantankerous old buggers who grew up in a ghetto.
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
Cheers, Ronan. Can be very interesting but really, all we gave at the end of the day is our reputation. And what is Mick’s?
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
I’ve taught food webs in biology for years mate. Your comment only bamboozled me because it makes no sense and has bugger all relevance to the chip on Mick Malthouse’s shoulder.
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
Mission accomplished.
Michael can carry on in the box for as long as he continues to breathe air as far as I’m concerned.
Considering he’s only at Carlton out of spite for Collingwood makes seeing him internally combust on national TV each week one of life’s joys.
But he really could, and should, stop being a rude old bullying bastard.
As Tom Hafey said, “There are only two free things in life – fresh air and civility.”
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
I also believe the word Hawthorn has a couple of the letter “H” in it. (Not your fault, Ronan).
Hawthorn-Sydney clash could be the one that decides the flag
Can’t agree, Scott. I’d take the insight and decency of Bomber, the Scotts, Hinkley, Buckley, Roos, Longmire and Hardwick any day of the week ahead of a grumpy old prick from Wendouree West with a chip on his shoulder who’s forgotten where he came from.
People, like animals, are sometimes just jerks
Great piece but your own backing up technique is horrific. Walk with the bowler, Geoffrey my boy. The 39th second of this clip is perfect.

All tremble when the Mankad shows its claws
Factually horrendous and full of guesses from someone who seems to have as much footy nous as Scott Morrison. And with the last five wooden spooners winning between two and five games and the Pies already winning one, this tripe has already aged poorly.
Why Collingwood will claim the 2022 wooden spoon
