OFS, that’s not the point. I think everyone accepts that there are some players who go above and beyond and do an enormous amoujnt of good. But the question has to be asked, how many AFL players would turn up to your average run of the mill Auskick session if it wasn’t a condition of their playing contract?
Arbib is guilty of the same generalisations as Costello – he says all players do it out of a desire to make the community a better place. Do all, or even most, players think that way when they get to appearance number 10 or 15 out fo their comulsory 21? I seriously doubt it.
Let’s see how the CBA negotiations go around this topic.

I’m actually against the establishment of extra foundations, simply because of how much of the money that gets donated is used to fund overheads and salaries (including salaries of relatives of the athletes). There is no question that the use of some athletes’ images raises a lot of money and that some of this does some good for sections of the community. But if they really thought about how to maximise the amount they could generate for the needy, why not lend their image and the same amount of their time to an established charity?

I wasn’t suggesting this for regular social/club golf. Only for tournaments, where it’s the caddies that perform those functions in any case, not the players.

Golf needs bunker boys and girls, just like tennis

The pit falls for the A-Leauge are not with expansion, in my view. They are with the ownership structure. The private ownership model has failed dismally in Australia; and not just becasue sporting teams invariably spend more than they make.
Private ownership gives the wrong incentives to management – generally, this means short term success in an effort to generate profits, at the expense of long term strategies to build a supporter-base and onfield success over a long period of time.
Any new teams should be set up as genuiine not-for-profit clubs, with membership like in the AFL. They should be subsidised by the FFA, not sold to a bunch of rich jock-sniffers.

Is the A-League rushing towards expansion?

To compete with Melbourne, for starters, Perth would need to relocate to Adelaide, or Sydney.

Victoria leading the way in luring major sports

The real problem here is that the appointment as captain is now seen as a career-long appointment. It soouldn’t be. We should be prepared to change the captaincy whenever the need (or an opportunity) arises. We keep talking about Clarke as “the next captain” when we should be talking aboout his as “a future captain”. I don’t think he fits into the former categgory but I’m prepared to put him in the second category.

Clarke shows why he is anything but captain material

We are allowed to kill and eat animals, we are allowed to keep them as pets and we pay to watch them performa at circuses and sea parks. So, yes, they are assets. The human race is where it is today – and I acknowledge there are lots of bad parts about where we are and how we got here – because of domination of weaker subspecies.

Just waht the AFL needs, another committee.

Let’s be clear. Jumps racing and racing in general is not an enertainment product. It’s a betting product. Th simple test for this is that if there were o bettting, people wouldn’t watch any form of racing – perhaps apart from a few genuinely engaging events like the Melbourne Cup.

Definitely right to select Folau. First, they need to pick their best available side to honoour their obligations to supporters, sponsors and broadcasters. Second, there’s every chance Folau may well want to return to the NRL fold one day if things don’t work out for him in the AFL, which is a very big chance. They’d be mad to completely wipe him.
