I think it’s time to decide on Clarke…make him captain of the one day team now. Keep Ponting in the team if he wants to play on. I thought he did a pretty good job against England, and there really are few options right now. I guess the other plausible name that seems to have suddenly dropped off the radar is Katich…but age isn’t his friend either. I would give Clarke a go for the one-dayers with the view to having him takeover from Ponting in tests, with Ponting staying in the side, form permitting. If Clarke’s form isn’t up to it, then it stays with Ponting unless his form isn’t up to it, in which case I’d go for Katich, unless he was injured in which case…
It’s a mess…I think my ideal solution is the current Shield cricketer of the year learns to bowl spin, and does a Colin ‘Funky’ Miller as a late starter. Bowls medium, bowls spin, made runs in the Shield this year, took wickets AND captains his state. Bring him in at seven with Haddin at six and give up on Smith for now.
