thanks Bobby – it’s brilliant experience that’s for sure. we went up for some of the world cup games and had a ball as well.

haha! good question mate. definitely an massive oversight on my behalf emitting that info. was Staropramen, which i’m quite partial to. quality lager. i think around £6 for one of those big bopper cups. would really struggle to find a pub selling a pint Staropramen for that in London

i actually agree with you jimmmy. and was probably being a little too cute getting my point across. league was quite revolutionary in that regard in compensating in players and long may that continue.

what struck me about Wigan (and the league world cup in 22) was just how unique and accessible the live experience was in comparison to some of the more “global” (read: over-commercialized) other sports. more championship than premier league so to speak. something worth protecting by making sure money serves the game vs money simply serving money

What a first game for the kids! Gonna be hard to top. Well maybe a Penny win next time.

We didn’t actually get to Wigan proper. Couldn’t find a hotel, so had to do the schlep from Manchester. Well worth the trip though

Thanks Albo – appreciate it mate.

Thanks mate. Guessing you made the trip up as well? Such a great night, apart from the result

Thanks jimmmy – enjoy Trafford! That will be brilliant.

Love your last line TDAndo – Not the winning or losing fans; no one ever won an argument around belief by offering logic…. And the point about trying to find methods that please fans. sums it up perfectly. the emotional investment we have in sport is what makes it great as a fan. we’ll always feel bitter losing a close game, but refs shouldn’t have to appease this.

Hahaha! I would’ve been with you back in 19 Paulo. There’s was nothing at all to take from that horror night. not a good year to be a kiwi in England. thanks for the comment mate.

yeah bang on Guess. when i was rewatching i couldn’t beleive the 2 minutes of play that lead to the disallowed try weren’t given back and play restarted from the knock-on/pen. seems a massive oversight. what if that was 20 phases and 5mins before NZ scored. basically 5% of the game becomes meaningless.

man i wish Richie or Jordie hit one of them Cec. 😢

But not too be, we probably cashed quite a few chips already sneaking past ireland. completely agree the task of a referee is so hard, probably harder than a player in some respects. i would be a bloody useless. i almost think the amount we see TMOs downplays this a little. makes everything think they could do it and its easy

Thanks ATW – this brilliantly summarizes my feeling too. The cognitive dissonance point specifically. it feels like the current use of the TMO is taking away some of the magic of rugby in pursuit of something that’s impossible. As fans of the game I do think we can make a choice to accept errors as you say, and hopefully wag the dog a bit

thanks Purdo 😊

Thanks for the comment Bliksem. I think we broadly agree on the use of the TMO. I would just limit the definition of lead up to try and dangerous play. I would probably like one phase before a try, but happy for the 2 phase guideline to become law. Otherwise I think it risks a slippery slope to how far you go back for a ‘critical decision’. As it opens the door for more TMO involvement, not less. To be honest if the Boks had of scored that same try on the night I would’ve been calling for it to be overturned. But, thinking about it now i’m happy for that to be let go next time it goes against the All Blacks. As, I think having one person making the bulk of the decisions is going to make things more consistent and we live with the things they miss. Plenty went for NZ in the next 5 minutes after the disallowed. i don’t think Barnes should’ve overruled his call of knock-on to penalise Fourie and I can the see a 50/50 for forward pass. didn’t necessarily change the game and Boks deserving winners. i’d just like to see magnificent efforts like Mo-unga’s not chalked off next time. Congrats on the win! I’ve never seen a team like this Bok outfit. Selfless and just refusing to lose.

Hahaha! He should be the first person looking in the mirror and then he should permanently delete his Twitter account. Lots to admire about Rassie and I think he’s a great rugby character. But he has plenty to answer for on this front

Thanks Khun Phil. I’m actually a Spurs fans. Last nights game gave me nasty dejavu. Love Big Ange! How good is he. He’s probably one of the most impressive coaches/managers in sport. And agree with his sentiment, was happy to see him not follow Arteta’s path. Feel like things are reaching boiling point with VAR. A lot of commentary about doing away with it, because the pros are being far outweighed by the cons. Especially around fan going experience and being able to celebrate goals. I would be in favour of its limited use. It’s not delivering on 100% accuracy it seemed to promise. Empower the person in the middle and accept the swings and roundabouts of their decisions has to be the way forward.

Cheers mate. Congrats on the win!

Thanks Kia…glad to hear it!

I’m with you there crash ball, love me a bit of flower of Scotland.

Murrayfield: Newer isn’t always better

Yeah Stade France was a big let down. Another reason to be disappointed about Ireland missing out on 2023

Murrayfield: Newer isn’t always better

Topical and accurate comment there in brief. Can’t believe they’re knocking down the perfectly good SFS, especially given that it’s hardly ever at capacity.

Murrayfield: Newer isn’t always better

Reading that I know why people reminisce about the good old days. After spending a lot of time in Australia, I’m just happy to enjoy a full strength beer at a sporting ground. Shows how much has changed.

Haha…the old man is now of the same matured disposition. He definitely wasn’t sipping on a hip flask this time round.

Murrayfield: Newer isn’t always better

Glad you enjoyed it Harry and thanks for your kind words. Especially giving the consistent quality you’ve been producing on here over the years! 🙂

Murrayfield: Newer isn’t always better

Would have to agree, although newlands is still on the bucket list unfortunately. Stade France the week before was so sterile in comparison.
