Brisbane Broncos vs St George Illawarra Dragons: NRL live scores, blog

An opening game to remember for the Blues with by far their most complete team performance for many years. With an experienced group of players, most still well in their prime, and further depth in the vast amount of players pushing for selection (S. Boyd, Vaughan, J. Mclean, J.Roberts, T. Trbojevic, M. Moylan, D. Walker) it seems a genuine opportunity to dominate the SOO arena for some time. It’s difficult to see any definitive positional weaknesses the Blues could encounter over the coming years.

Queensland on the other hand, are facing an arduous task of replacing half their ageing forward pack and the inevitable departure of one of SOO greatest spine combinations. The 2014 series was a wake up call that went unheeded by QLD selectors. Injuries aside, the era of QLD dominance was coming to an end and a crossroads was reached. Begin the risky, albeit necessary process of blooding new players, or retain the old faithfuls who can deliver another few series wins on old legs.

QLD selectors decided on the latter. One can argue that injuries to key players have aided in the downfall, though these injuries came to players already in their last few origin games. It has merely sped up the already urgent need to bring in young talent to several positions.

I hope that QLD look to the future and not only to winning on the day. I would base my QLD team from here on out heavily on the recruitment and investment in the younger generation of players.
