I just want to put it out there that I’m not at all implying that the Mariners should be kicked out of the league.
I’m observing that the A-League has essentially admitted that a regional market – as the Mariners are – isn’t worth pursuing in the future because of various reasons. I admire the Mariners for what they’ve been able to achieve and I love the fact that, unlike other codes, football can have teams from these areas that can compete and ‘punch above their weight’.
They’ve had a history of proving people wrong, and for their sake I hope they continue to do so.

I agree that not enough value is put on Shield games. Playing in the grade match is probably Clarke’s tactic to put a score on the board and pull up fine because all he would have done is whack boundaries for 4 hours, whereas we all know that a 4-day game in the Shield would test him more because he would have to field, bat properly, etc.
