That is over 2 years so divide your figure by half and take some off because maybe he actually does want to stay with the Waratahs rather than live in Limerick and you’re not far off the value of a very good Super Rugby player who is also a decent fill in at test level.

Horne and McMahon re-sign with ARU

I don’t think David is wrong at all. It is a big ask but I’d put my house on 54 points being enough to make it in.

The Tahs can still make the Super finals

A picture of Matt Lucas rather than Tom Kingston would probably suit this post a bit better.

Matt Lucas deserves a Waratahs starting spot

Oh I wish for disasters like beating New Zealand in a World Cup Semi-Final and then beating them again in 2004.

Pocock, Smith to team up against Waratahs

“The better players in 2001 weren’t even English” ???
Vickery, Johnson, Grewcock, Corry, Hill, Wilkinson, Robinson, Perry.
That’s a pretty handy 8 out of 15 without looking at the bench from the side that thumped Australia in game 1. Vickery, Johnson, Wilkinson and Robinson would have been world 15 picks from 2001-2003.
I’m reckoning that mob had a far impact on all 3 games.

Lions selection headaches aplenty

I don’t care but Loite Tuqiri would I imagine. He had his contract torn up for less than belting a team mate.

Who cares about the fight! Tri Nations are on the line

Interesting.
So the Waratahs board will only pick forwards to coach and even if that forward is a good coach, he will do no good in NSW.
And, ex-backs aren’t necessarily the answer either.
So, the answer is to select a new and exciting coach but he can’t be an ex forward or be crap.
Any names you want to throw out there ?

Waratahs announce Michael Foley as new coach, Elsom linked

And can you remind me what position Ewen McKenzie played ?
And while you’re at it, start at the other end and look at the worst try scoring side in Australia and let me know where Richard Graham played his footy ?

Palu has a cracked shoulder blade. How is that Chris Hickey’s fault ?

Palu's World Cup hopes hang by a thread

Dissappointing LAS. The rugby scrum is a unique contest in rugby like no nother. It is why rugby is truly a game for all shapes and sizes. Rugby is unique because there are so many different contests. I enjoy watching Quade Cooper play as much as any man but I also admire watching the Franks brothers and co’ demolarize opponents through magnificent application of their uniqure strength and skills. The Crusaders scrum is certainly best in the competition and I can’t think of one in recent memory as good. I think it will be the difference this week. C’mon the Reds but God help them if they have to pack too many scrums.

Super Rugby final to be a clash of the titans

Could Phil Mooney have developed Reds?

You must be kidding Stillmissit. McKenzie’s Tahs made the final in 2005 and 2008 off the back of dominant forward packs and you’re trying to argue he doesn’t coach forwards very well.
As for not being able to identify young talent, a few names that come to mind that made their debuts under McKenzie are Beale, Turner, Palu, Horne, Kepu, Polota-Nau, Robinson.
Mooney was a nice bloke that coached a team to sling the ball to the side line at every opportunity. It looks great but doesn’t win many games. McKenzie has coached them to play smart and use the wide channels when appropriate. He should be the Wallaby coach in 2012 and beyond.

Could Phil Mooney have developed Reds?

I’ll argue with Spiro untill the cows come home about Phil Waugh’s leadership. In the professional era the Waratahs were an underachieving rabble until Phil Waugh and Ewen McKenzie turned them in to a team that knew how to win. Other Australian Provinces would kill for a leader that players rally to like the Tahs do with Phil Waugh. I’ve heard Kurtley Beale talk about his repect for Phil Waugh and Spiro should be ashamed of himself for insuating KB is leaving becasue Phil did not encourage him. Good luck for this week-end Phil and hoepfully the next two games after that. You will be missed by real Tahs supporters.
As a side note, when will the Roar editors actually ask Sprio to chek his facts before publishing. Last season, the Tahs made the finals whle socring the most tries in a season in Waratahs history.

Rugby field battles end for Phil Waugh

Good idea in theory Willy and I assume the ARU agree with you. The All Blacks seem to go OK though with their power concentrated in a few places instead of 5. I think it will be a disaster and lead to strong Genia/Cooper type combinations being split up all the time as their value rises on the back of playing well together.

Is it the last chance for these Waratahs?

Good article Brett and you’ve asked some good questions. I think your question about “windows” is pertinent to all Australian Teams. Once the current contracts run out at the end of 2013, no Autralian Team will be able to sign enough quality or depth to compete against 10 other teams who don’t operate under a salary cap. The Australian Conference winner will rotate like Rugby League premierships but they will then get beaten at home by a strong New Zealand or South African side that has been able to assemble a quality squad with no restrictions. In summary, the Reds or Tahs need to win one very soon as the window will close for all in a year or 2.

Is it the last chance for these Waratahs?

Put Kepu in the first XV instead of Slipper and you’ve got it nailed I think. Horne in for Faingaa if fit. Higginbotham to cover 8 and 6.

Wallabies boast class in World Cup year

“The Waratahs will have a dreadful backline next year unless they do some recruiting fast”
I couldn’t disagree more. Before they recruit anyone,
9. McKibbin
10. Barnes
11. Mitchell
12. Carter
13. Horne
14. Turner
15. Ashley-Cooper
21. Halangahu
22. Pakalani
23. Kingston
Kurtley is a big loss but things won’t end with him taking the money and running off to Melbourne.

Expect the unexpected, with Reds and Waratahs in box seat

PB, a couple of points.
You may be right about the Bulls having reason to complain but they had their chance last night and blew it. I agree the Australian Conference is a tad weaker this year but things will change over time and every year there will be a couple of teams that show up as easy beats. I think most reasonable people saw the Lions and Cheetahs as easier opponents than the Brumbies (and probably the Force as well) at the start of the season but it didn’t quite turn out that way.
Drop kick has every right to make the statement about the Waratahs attack. They had a flat period in the middle and had to tough out a couple of wins, but after 18 rounds, they have scored the most tries and have scored 6 bonus point victories. They’ve lost a few they should have won which is why they are playing finals away from home but their attack has looked very impressive in the last few rounds. C’mon the Tahs !

Waratahs have tough assignment in Auckland

From what I have read, third party money will be included in the cap. The Rebels will have very little left to improve their forwards and will struggle to hold on to any improving youngsters after their current contracts run out. It will be great for spreading the talent around the 5 Australian teams BUT, It will be impossible for Aussie teams to compete against the South Africans and New Zealanders while their unions are happy for power/money/players to be concentrated in 2 or 3 strong teams.

Beale and O’Connor: Let the entertainment begin

So he signs with the team that it hanging off the bottom rung of the ladder ???
It is necessarily all about the money.

James O'Connor quits Western Force for Rebels

Its interesting that the team that has the worst defence in the comp has spent all their money on 2 attacking rock stars. The Rebels of 2012 may score a couple more tries but I can’t see them winning too many more games.

Beale and O’Connor: Let the entertainment begin

No doubt. I wonder if anyone will ever have the honesty to just announce: “we offered the kid a truck-load and he accepted”.

James O'Connor quits Western Force for Rebels

I can’t wait for the press release that will explain how James going to the Rebels (or whoever he signs with) is all about what’s best for his rugby and the culture that particular team is creating. I’ve no problem with young blokes like him and Kurtley auctioning their skills off to the highest bidder but please don’t insult me by explaining it is about anything other than cold hard cash.

James O'Connor quits Western Force for Rebels

It won’t be possible for the Reds or any Australian team to dominate over any sustained period due to the salary cap the ARU is looking to impose. The salary cap will spread Australian talent around the 5 teams.

Reds can dominate for years to come

Like your backline. I would run with that. Robbie will not pick O’Connor at 12 as he is too small for the extra defensive load. Unfortunately, if you have to defend outside Quade, your defensive workload doubles.
You can’t be serious about Slipper and Daley, surely ? The Reds scrum was on skates last night against the Force. Pick those 2 against an international standard scrum and it will be a disaster. Put them on ice for 2015. Robinson and Kepu are clearly the 2 best props in the country. Can’t argue with the rest on form.
