The Waikato Chiefs have been without doubt the least successful of the New Zealand sides in Super Rugby competition, making the finals only once in their history. The Chiefs have finished a Super Rugby season in between sixth and eighth position an incredible nine times since their inception in 1996, and finished tenth in the expanded 15 team competition in 2011. Despite their poor record in Super Rugby finals, the Chiefs have never finished with the Wooden Spoon.

by AFP, 28 Apr 2013
The Chiefs have put their Super Rugby defence back on track, repelling a persistent Sharks side to secure a 37-29 bonus-point victory in Hamilton. A fast start to both halves on Saturday proved the key for the Chiefs, who ended a run of two defeats and lifted themselves back to the top of the New [...]
Can the Waratahs support the whole city of Sydney?
by Elisha Pearce, 25 Apr 2013
I recount this story to illuminate why so many people believe the Waratahs home ground of the Sydney Football Stadium is both a blessing and a curse. Last Friday my barista, Baz – with whom I discuss sports, especially the round ball code about his sons’ stints with academies and clubs in the UK – [...]

NSW coach Michael Cheika said throw Israel Folau to the Lions after the code-hopping star inspired the Waratahs to a gritty 25-20 win over the defending champion Chiefs in Friday night’s Super Rugby clash at Allianz Stadium. A try to replacement hooker John Ulugia four-and-a-half minutes from fulltime earned the Waratahs a thrilling victory after [...]

Chiefs seek second coming for Sonny Bill
by AAP, 10 Apr 2013
If Sonny Bill Williams returns to New Zealand rugby it will be in Chiefs colours, coach Dave Rennie believes. The 27-year-old is currently playing for NRL side Sydney Roosters after famously honouring a one-year deal agreed on a handshake with Roosters powerbroker Nick Politis. At the time of his departure, Williams made no secret he [...]

Jesse Mogg needs to move back to Queensland
by Rob from Brumby Country, 21 May 2013
Jesse Mogg is the greatest Australian rugby find of his generation. Forget Quade Cooper, James O’Connor, Kurtley Beale, even Israel Folau. Prodigious talents though they may be, they possess but a spark of the ability of the Canberra-based Queenslander. Okay, clean your keyboards, I was exaggerating a little there. But it might not be far [...]
Waratahs building momentum says Barnes
by James MacSmith, 21 May 2013
Playmaker Berrick Barnes says the NSW Waratahs are finally starting to find some consistent form after a slow start to their Super Rugby season under new coach Michael Cheika. The Waratahs have won three successive games and turned around their round-three mauling at the hands of the Brumbies in March with an impressive 28-22 come-from-behind [...]

The Melbourne Rebels’ drought-breaking Super Rugby win over the Stormers has created confidence they can achieve another breakthrough against the NSW Waratahs on Friday night. Open letter to ARU CEO Bill Pulver (pt two): nationalise Super Rugby
by kingplaymaker, 21 May 2013
The second chapter of this somewhat slow-burning series has arrived, and with an apparently meagre theme, hardly justifying large-scale treatment. But while the subject might seem a triviality, it is a dainty alteration to the body of Super rugby that nonetheless aims to effect a strikingly transformative impression. A leitmotif of this series has been [...]
Finals talk taboo for NSW Waratahs
by Darren Walton, 20 May 2013
The NSW Waratahs are refusing to talk finals football despite continuing on their impressive roll towards the Super Rugby playoffs with a gritty win over the stumbling Brumbies. NSW’s 28-22 triumph earned the Waratahs three straight wins for the first time in three years, bumped the Brumbies off the top of the ladder and raised [...]

The Waratahs can thank utility back Berrick Barnes for their gripping 28-22 win over the front-running Brumbies at ANZ Stadium last night. Barnes came on from the bench for the second half to replace the injured Rob Horne. Up to that point the Brumbies led 13-6, with the Waratahs playing like lost sheep, despite winning [...]

Melbourne Rebels players are hoping their breakthrough Super Rugby win over the Stormers helps coach Damien Hill keep his job. The Rebels edged the highly-rated Stormers 30-21 on Friday at AAMI Park, which was their first win over a South African opponent. Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has backed 21-year-old openside tyro Michael Hooper to play against the British and Irish Lions this June after Brumbies flanker George Smith was ruled out of the squad through injury. The 32-year-old, 110 Test veteran Smith was touted to play a major role for the Wallabies in the Lions tour before [...]
