As one of Super Rugby’s foundation clubs in 1996, the Wellington Hurricanes struggled in their first season before rebounding strongly to finish their second year in third position. The Hurricanes then entered a lean period in their history which saw them miss the finals on five consecutive occasions. Since 2003 however, the Hurricanes have been a constant in Super Rugby finals, culminating in their maiden Grand final appearance against the Crusaders in 2006. An inconsistent 2011 season saw the Hurricanes finish ninth overall, and will look to regenerate their lineup in 2012 and beyond.

Super Rugby Statistical Awards (Pt 1: Defence)
by B-Rock - July 6th 2011 @ 2:24am
It’s time for part one of the inaugural Super Rugby awards based on the statistical performance across the season and finals to date. First up, I will be focussing on the best and worst defensive teams and players in Super Rugby. Hopefully, this confirms some views and challenges others. I have used raw data available [...]
Do more Super derbies equal more tries?
by RuckinGoodStats - June 28th 2011 @ 1:23am
More local derbies to spark interest was one of the features of this year’s Super Rugby competition, but has it lead to more tries than inter-conference matches? Unless you are from stereotypical thinking in the northern hemisphere, rugby is about scoring tries. I wanted to know if the derby format impacted on tries. The concept [...]
Hurricanes fracas a result of NZRU mismanagement
by The Crowd - June 14th 2011 @ 4:59am
The names involved in the Hurricane coach/player fracas are incidental in that they have been caught up in a web of New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) mismanagement that should never have been allowed to eventuate. Tony Smith’s (New Zealand Fairfax journalist) article has a definite agenda and emphasises the positive framing of Mark Hammett. But [...]

Why Ma’a Nonu and Andrew Hore had to go
by Damien - June 10th 2011 @ 6:37am
Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett made a huge statement by sacking All Blacks Ma’a Nonu and Andrew Hore. The message to the team was simple: “No one is above the team”. The Hurricanes have always been the underachievers of Super Rugby, and something had to be done. No one is arguing about the ability of Nonu [...]

Chiefs continue to wait for SBW
by AAP - February 10th 2012 @ 11:55am
The Chiefs square up against the Highlanders in Queenstown on Saturday in their second Super Rugby pre-season match without boxing champion Sonny Bill Williams. Williams missed the Chiefs’ 36-0 win over the Rebels in Geelong as he prepared for his New Zealand heavyweight bout with American Clarence Tillman in Hamilton on Wednesday. Williams dispatched Tillman [...]

David Pocock: a skipper my Force teammates will fight for
by Matt Hodgson - February 8th 2012 @ 8:10am
It is the Western Force’s first ever change of guard, with the announcement that David Pocock will replace Nathan Sharpe as captain for 2012. Many would be surprised, with inaugural captain Sharpe still one of the top second rowers in Australia, and with a year left at the Force. The question has to be asked, [...]
Hoiles eyeing return in 2012
by Andrew Logan - February 7th 2012 @ 9:39am
I met Stephen Hoiles in May 2011, when I was invited to spend a weekend with the Brumbies courtesy of one of their corporate partners Deloitte, who work with the Brumbies on innovation and business management. I had watched him for much longer than that, particularly during the awful season of 2009, when Hoiles, as [...]
