Eastwood have clinched the 2011 Shute Shield premiership by defeating Sydney University yesterday afternoon after 100 minutes of play, bringing Sydney University’s grand final winning streak to an end.

The Shute Shield finals have arrived, and six teams have a chance to win the 2011 Shute Shield Premiership. In order of ladder finish they are Eastwood, Sydney University, Manly, Eastern Suburbs, Randwick and Northern Suburbs.

I have supported Eastwood Rugby Club ever since I can remember. My maternal grandfather played for them after the war. In fact, he died while watching them play in ABC television’s “match of the day” from his home in Mudgee, NSW.

After attending today’s rugby preliminary final between Eastwood and Randwick at Woollahra Oval, I have to say that the state of the playing surface and spectator facilities is appalling and it is inexcusable that the NSW Rugby Union could countenance playing such an important finals series match at this venue.
