I watched the second Australia versus New Zealand cricket Test match, which had more drama, twists and turns and sheer edge-of-the-seat intensity than a Hitchcock movie, and it became the most thrilling Test match I have watched for decades.

The Goliaths of cricket falling to the slingshot stone of David, only seven runs short of victory after having the contemptuous expectation of New Zealand becoming, yet again, another ‘swallowed up and spat out team’ of the Australian cricketing juggernaut. This was a fairy-tail ending for David.

This time, it was not to be for Goliath and the Aussie throats were slit faster than an All Black Haka.

Australia have been stunned that this New Zealand eleven could inflict such hurt onto a team that portrays to the world an inference that its only reason they show up to play New Zealand is to collect the trophies.

In most games against New Zealand they do. Australia has great pride in winning but nothing gives them greater pleasure in victory than when they shaft New Zealand.

It is distinctly noticeable over this side of the ditch that when Australia wins against New Zealand, all bangers flash and lights pop in the Australian media, as if to place it hard, up the noses of the New Zealanders.

Should Australia lose, the media either go silent or get up the noses of their own. Simply put and because of this yo-yo attitude, Australia never seems to be humble and gracious in winning.

The Kiwis portray it as an inferiority complex, and then use it as a retaliatory, baited-barb similar to sheep inferences used by Australians on Kiwis.

No team ever likes to lose. This loss, however, has been a sudden jolt to Cricket Australia and their attitude toward the New Zealand games of having being won before they went on to the field and that the only reason they were doing so was to find out by how much.

Sometimes, the mouse does roar and bites the bum of those bending over to show it. As individuals, all the Australian players I have ever met or played with are bloody good mates and bloody good blokes with Australia having exceptionally good sporting teams.

Because New Zealand win so few cricketing games against Australia, and when arrogance, disrespect or poor attitude toward Kiwi teams are inflicted on them when they suffer a loss, they retaliate by reminding Australia about their underarm bowl.

To win against Australia, everyone reacts way out of proportion to the event. Simply savour the moment and be proud that you tried to do your best whatever team you were in.

The Kiwis are on a roll and the media should acknowledge their achievement with the same euphoria that winning Aussie teams are given. The media should get off the backs of the Aussie teams and stop lambasting them when they lose.

Team losses at the Rugby World Cup, Bledisloe Cup games, Super and Tri Nation rugby games, cricket, netball and so, are simple to understand. The team’s performance was not good enough on the day.

The Kiwis tend to accept loss or wins with grace and respect of their opposition. It is time for Australia to stand up and do the same and for the Australian media to accept that their teams are mortal.
