The odds are that sport will never be the same

There seems to be a disturbing new additional segment in the telecast of sporting events at the moment. That is the cut to a betting agency for the latest odds on the game, plus all the other odds and ends that you can bet on these days – i.e. the exotics.

I feel so ashamed of myself. I had thought that I was a committed sporting fan, that I was really devoted to the spectating of quality professional athletic endeavours, and that I followed my teams with as much fervour and passion as anyone could ask for.

Lately, everyone’s talking about gambling in sport. Live odds, sponsorship, stadium naming rights, exotic bets, relentless advertising… it’s in the news, on TV and radio, they’re even arguing about it in Canberra.

During recent times I have noticed a huge spike in the prevalence of advertising relating to placing a bet on games when watching the football. Gambling has been always been part of sport growing up as a lad, but it was mainly isolated to horse racing.

There has been discussion in the media recently suggesting that the government will ban advertising by alcohol companies for sports.
