Round one of the NRL season was filled with the usual hype and excitement for the young players making their debuts, and there was probably plenty of backslapping for the job that the Toyota Cup is doing in continuing to produce the next “superstars” of the NRL.

Being a season ticket holder for an NRL club, there’s nothing I appreciate more than seeing a local talent playing for his home team. It’s absolutely fantastic watching a young player at the club that he supported as a junior develop from a raw Toyota Cup player to a first grade star.

Every year, when I watch the NRL grand final, I’m always left wanting a bit more out of the experience. I think its great that they televise the NSW Cup and Toyota Cup finals, as this helps to promote two great competitions and showcases grass-roots as well as up and coming rugby league stars.

We all love even competition, finding security in the knowledge that our side will be able to turn it around next year. A salary cap only goes part of the way to ensuring this; it is the distribution of talent across the league that ensures its evenness.
