The Australian rugby sevens team had a shocking start against Argentina at the Tokyo Olympics conceding 24 unanswered points in the first half.

The Aussies were left in shock as Argentina scored five tries to nil in the first seven minutes. It proved to be too much to peg back. Despite a much stronger second half, where Australia outscored Argentina three tries to one the damage had been done.

Argentina’s 29-19 win came on the back of complete team performance with six players scoring a try for the South Americans.

The Australian team was at least able to get their confidence back in the second half and had some promising signs with Samu Kerevi scoring a try soon after being subbed into the game.

Australia bounced back with a convincing 42-5 victory over Korea on Monday night but they still have it all to do with New Zealand also in their group.

New Zealand were favourites to win the Gold medal before the competition started and they managed to beat both Argentina (35-14) and Korea (50-5).

It means it’s all going to come down to the third and final games. Australia will be hoping to beat New Zealand but if they can’t do that they’ll need a narrow loss and hope that Argentina doesn’t demolish Korea by a greater margin than they managed.

If they do finish third in the pool they can still progress to the finals but they have to be one of the best losing teams with eight out of the 12 teams making it to the quarters.
