NSW skipper Simon Katich has won the Steve Waugh Medal as the Blues’ player of the year.

Katich, who led the Blues to the Pura Cup title as the competition’s leading run scorer, was presented the award at a presentation ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney tonight.

He was voted a clear victor by his teammates, receiving 269 votes ahead of Brad Haddin (129) in second.

Katich was also voted Pura Cup player of the year, for scoring a competition-record 1506 runs at an average of 94.13.

He hit five centuries against five different opponents during the summer, including an innings of 306 against Queensland at the SCG.

Haddin was named NSW’s one-day player of the year, scoring 34 runs at 62.80 and taking five catches and two stumpings in only six Ford Ranger Cup matches.

Both Katich and Haddin have already been rewarded for their domestic form with selection in the Australian squad to tour the West Indies next month.

NSW Breakers captain Lisa Sthalekar was named as the Belinda Clark medallist for the women’s player of the year.

Sthalekar led the Breakers to a third consecutive title and was the competition’s second-highest run scorer, amassing 312 runs at 44.57 and taking 12 wickets at 14.58.

“Simon and Lisa have both had fantastic seasons in leading their respective sides to victory,” Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said.

“Simon’s performances were phenomenal and winning the Steve Waugh Medal is a just reward for his outstanding record-breaking summer.

“Lisa has also had an impressive summer and her form was a major factor in the Breakers winning the WNCL for an incredible 10th time in 12 seasons.”
