David Campese: the next Tahs coach

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

I read in yesterday’s paper an article by David Campese that talked about the Waratahs’ coaching position and Australian rugby in general. He mentioned that when the Waratahs are strong, so too are the Wallabies. So why hasn’t a coach been found yet?

Perhaps they should have been lined one up before they axed Ewen.

Campese wasn’t impressed by Louden as he doesn’t stick around with a team for more than a year and he also mentioned the need for a head coach to be an-ex back rather than an ex-forward.

Then he threw out the idea that the NWSU should have been in contact with Mark Ella, trying to coax him into the position long ago.

Well I say, “what about you Campo?” Why haven’t you handed your resume over to the NSWRU?

Or since having a part in coaching the Australian Adelaide 7s team, are you really not interested?

Well the coach has to come from Randwick hence the links to Louden and Chieka. The other candidates are Knox, Jones, Ella and Gaffney I guess they could pull Maxwell out of nowhere. The reason they always have a Randwick coach is so they don't have to pick Randwick players. The coach does not pick the team! Ever wonder why Hoiles, Turinui, Phibbs, Finnegan, Cararo, Housten, Latham went elsewhere? Elsom and Frier are next out the door.

If Campo genuinely wants coach he should focus with on developing the Australian Sevens squad. With the Sevens he could be a very inspirational mentor to future Wallaby backs.

I'd rather ignore the twaddle in the Daily Telegraph and see someone who didn't play for Randwick lead the Tahs Well said Westy

If Campo became Tahs coach would he discontinue writing all that negative twaddle in the Daily Telegraph? If so please make him coach NSWRU...

Westy, I like a man of few words. You are ansolutely right. Campese was an astonishing player -- but we can't leave it at that. Truth is, we're all having a little trouble knowing what to do with him now that he has finished playing but is still living among us. I suspect he has the same problem: Where the hell do I fit in anymore? I popped into his shop at The Rocks one day not so long ago and there he was behind the counter -- and he seemed quite morose, even grumpy or disenchanted, and I felt for him. Having once been a god, he was now just an ordinary man flogging clothes. That's a big adjustment. I didn't say it of course but it almost slipped my lips: 'Weren't you David Campese?' I am opening a whole can of worms here but when a man has scaled the rugby heights that Campese has, in the aftermath the only way is . . . down. Frankly, we would love and admire David Campese a lot more if he had somehow ceased to be just after RWC 91. Yes, if he became dead; there I have said it. In that case, Campese would be loved and admired universally in perpetuity. Aussie Stadium would now be Campese Stadium, that sort of stuff. But in the meantime we're stuck with Campo, and Campo is stuck with us, yes? He pops up here and there, newspaper columns and so forth, but none of it will ever elevate him again to the heights from which he, in his mortality, has fallen.

Comletely agree with ACK, let him become the tah coach, more player for the other states. Tahman has more credibility then Campese......

Campo has retired from rugby over ten years ago, in that time he has managed to keep his name in the papers from offering his opinion and expertise and basically we listen because he had such an ilustrious playing carrer. It would take 1 unsuccesful stint at the waratahs basically 3 months and he will be out the news and his opinion would mean nothing. As a side, A few years ago I attended a stormers launch and one of the saddest things was that there was nobody hovering around Carel Duplessis asking for his opinion or getting their picture taken etc Carel Duplessis went from being one South Africas most gifted players to the guy who could not coach the Springboks. sad

Chris Ash, re Campo for Coach. I googled the word 'no' and found it in 520 languages. I was going to dump them all in here just to make a point (but that might test the patience of our dear moderator). David Campese coaching the Waratahs would be something skin to Chopper Read stepping in for the the Dalai Lama. Campese was a rugby genuis, probably the most exciting new player to burst onto the scene -- ever -- when he first played for the Wallabies. The trouble with geniuses is that the 'gift' they have is only a gift unto themselves. Transplanting or coaching it into others is well nigh impossible. I mean did Leonardo de Vinci EVER coach anyone to paint as well as he did? Of course not. The idea of Campo coaching the Waratahs is, well . . . laughable: No! Nein! Non! Nyet! .

FFS, Link didn't get sacked, he's seeing out his contract and not being offered a new one. Not quiet the same headline grabber though is it, which is why 'journos' report is as a brutal axing or a sacking and simple minded readers gobble it up! Campo coaching the 'Tahs, god I hope not. We'll bring back Hewat from o/s, sign De Bartolo to a S14 contract, somehow nab Holmes back from the Brumbies, sneak sharpe and Mitchell from the Force and we can be on our way to a Campo style side that has a complete inability to make a tackle. According to the 'journos' every coach under the sun is a contender - I'm sure Spiro could regale us with tales from 'unnamed, high profile NSWRU insiders' that show every single one is a sure thing for the job - and with actual good, successful coaches like Hickey and McKee in the mix why the hell would we scrape the bottom of the coaching barrel and sign Campo?

Rubbish - the saying actually goes "when Queensland are strong, Australia are strong". The tahs were...pretty poor...all through the 90's and we won two world cups (and Queensland won the super 6, and super 10 twice in that time).

What a great idea for ACT, Qld and WA rugby. It would ensure the wealth of talent leaving this state continued unabated.
