Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is hoping defender Nemanja Vidic and striker Wayne Rooney will be fit for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Barcelona.

Vidic suffered a facial injury in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea while Rooney hurt his hip. “We think both could make it but I can’t be certain,” Ferguson told the BBC.

The semi-final first leg ended 0-0 and a victory for United in the return game would ensure the first all-English Champions League final against Liverpool or Chelsea in Moscow on May 21.

Although they are on the verge of the final neither team is in exceptional form. United have gone three matches without a victory while Barcelona have won only one of their last nine domestic league games.

United have won their last 11 Champions League matches at Old Trafford and will fancy their chances of advancing with home advantage.

Barcelona are strengthened from the first leg by the return from suspension of captain Carles Puyol, although the banned Rafael Marquez misses out.
