Wasps and Leicester into Premiership final

Old rivals Wasps and Leicester will meet in the Premiership final at Twickenham after the two giants of English rugby completed their unlikely recoveries by beating Bath and Gloucester respectively today.

Wasps, who won 12 of their last 14 games to climb from the lower half of the table to finish second, had a convincing 21-10 home win, though it was soured by a serious leg injury to England flyhalf Danny Cipriani.

Champions Leicester, who were four minutes away from missing out on the playoffs before their last-gasp win over Harlequins in their final league game, triumphed 26-25 at Gloucester with an Andy Goode drop goal two minutes from time.

It was heartbreaking for Gloucester, who had led the table almost all season but, for the third time, earned nothing for ending the regular campaign top.

Cipriani’s injury looks to have ruled him out of the May 31 final and England’s two-test tour of New Zealand in June.

“It was obviously a nasty injury,” Wasps captain Lawrence Dallaglio told Sky Sports. “No one likes to see that, especially to someone who has such a bright future. It looks like he has dislocated his ankle.”

A screaming Cipriani was given oxygen on the pitch after suffering the injury 49 minutes into the game.
