Carney admits alcohol problem, UK move in doubt

By News / Wire

Wayward former Canberra rugby league star Todd Carney has admitted to having a problem with alcohol and says his deal in England is up in the air because his work visa has yet to be approved.

Carney, who was doing community work in Rwanda, told News Limited newspapers he was still anxiously waiting for the British High Commission to grant the visa so he could play for Huddersfield.

But with yet another incident hanging over his head – the 22-year-old is being investigated by police over the smashing of a shop window in the southern NSW town of Goulburn last weekend – there is some doubt about his future in England.

In August, Carney had his $1.6 million, four-year deal with the Raiders torn up after he was ejected from a Goulburn club.

He was deregistered from the NRL until 2010 after a string of alcohol-fuelled misdemeanours.

“I’ve just been stupid. I’ve been an idiot and I’ve got to change,” he admitted.

“I’m no alcoholic but I do have a problem with alcohol and when I get drunk.

“When I I drink a fair bit, it seems to hit me all at once.

“I just sort of black out.

“There’s been plenty of morning I’ve woken up and not had a clue what happened the night before.”

Or alternative theory Oikee (and if I have a choice of two theories I usually go for the simpler one) is that if they are so easily replaceable maybe they weren't so great in the first place... That said one thing about the Raiders in the last few years is that they are a true 'team' side where the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Relatively few big-ego / big-name players, but lots of hard team work. Carney is a disgrace and if anyone knows All Bar Nun in Canberra where he pissed on that girl they will know how unferal the place is and what an animal he is for having done that there. Its one of the least likely and least excusable of Canberra bars for that kind of filth.

He's got time away from the spot-light, until 2010 i think he has been suspended from the nrl. Funny how quickly all these so called great players are being replaced. How good is the youth programs working for league. Spot -on.

What is it with The Daily Telegraph and Todd Carney??? He has been listed in at least ten articles/editorial columns in the Daily Telegraph past three days!!! Seriously, is there a commercial arrangement in place with Carney?? Are they struggling for actual news?? Surely they don't think he is a role model for youth recovering from an alcohol problem do they?? The best time to engage that sort of role model is AFTER they have sorted their problems out!!! The trip to Rwanda also seems to be a big "Good News" story for them despite reading at least 3 times the trip was not about publicity!!! Don't get me wrong, the tour is a great idea but it is not what I need to read about in 3-4 sections of the paper for 3 days running. Also, what are they going to write when Carney slips up on the drink again?? What Carney needs is time away from the limelight learning there is more to life as an adult than drinking and stupid pranks at the expense of those around you!! Not his life plastered all over the papers again!! Why doesn't the Daily Telegraph focus on actual news and not this Cr*p!!!! Wally
