I'm not ready, says Aussie new boy Quiney

Victorian batsman Rob Quiney says he does not feel like he is ready for the step up to international cricket, despite his call-up to the Australian Twenty20 squad.

Quiney was named in the squad for Sunday’s match against New Zealand at the SCG, with injured Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke to be rested.

The 26-year-old was thrilled with the news, which came shortly after he was dismissed for a run-a-ball 50 in Victoria’s day-night win over New South Wales.

But he was frank when asked whether he felt ready to take the next step in his career.

“No I don’t, at the moment I’m trying to cement a spot in this side (with Victoria) and be more productive so when the likes of (Brad) Hodge, (David) Hussey and (Cameron) White aren’t playing that the team can rely on me for runs,” Quiney said.

“That’s my goal at the moment and unfortunately I missed out (on big scores) the last couple games, but it was good to get a start tonight.”

Despite his apprehensions, he was delighted to get the call.

“I found out about half an hour after I got out, so it was some sort of joy at going out, it’s an awesome feeling,” he said.

“The few games leading up to it weren’t too crash hot, but I feel like I’m hitting the ball well and the longer you’re out there the better you get.

“I’m nervous now already thinking about it.”
