Channel Nine verses the Gruen Transfer

The commercial stations must be hurting with the latest ratings showing that the ABC show, The Gruen Transfer, is regularly pulling in one million viewers.

Last night the Channel Nine Footy Show went up against the ABC team due to the Friday night game being shifted to Thursday.

The contrast was stark.

Wil Anderson and his team spent their half hour well. Sharp humour, self depreciation and an honest assessment of today’s marketing ensured a well produced and enjoyable half hour.

The Footy Show showed why it has lost significant ground since Eddy introduced us to the phrase “it’s been a big week in Football.”

Of particular interest was their screening parts of the controversial video put together by some North Melbourne players, including their captain.

The fact they showed the offending video, to the sound of muted laughter in the background, was hypocrisy at its most blatant.

Lyon desperately tried to hang onto any shred of integrity the show still has by asking the crowd to quieten down.

The video is proof that the AFL has a long way to go to stamp out sexist and degrading views towards woman, a key target of the AFL’s marketing campaign.

Of most concern is the fact that while decrying the content of the video, Channel Nine still chose to post it, in full, on their own news website.
