Is this the Blues team to start the fightback?

When State of Origin time comes around, it’s time to wake the sleeping giant. The team for Origin I was named tonight, and for the first time in a while, I am really excited by the team.

Ever since I was in the USA for the 2006 series, I have felt like I’ve missed the blooding of new players and haven’t had my finger on the pulse of the future of the game. Finally, this season, I feel like I have seen enough and read enough to be more interested and able to comment on the players that have been picked.

Besides, I am going up to Sydney for Game 2 which will be my first EVER Origin game.

So here goes.

1. Kurt Gidley (c) – He’s taken over from former teammate and Blues captain, ‘Bedsy’ Buderus, and he’s been a consistent performed for the Knights for years. For a while he’d seemed like the shining light in a lame team, but now that the Knights are actually performing, it’s good to see him still get this gig.

2. Jarred Hayne – I am undeniably biased, but I am so glad that Haynesy has nabbed a winger spot. He has been playing out of his skin the last few weeks at Fullback for the Eels and he has proved his freakiness with some fantastic efforts in past Origins. He will definitely not disappoint on the big stage.

3. Jamie Lyon – As an Eels fan, I am predisposed to hating Jamie Lyon and what he did to our team when he walked out on us all those years ago. His determination to avoid representative football has almost not helped him in winning fans other than those from Manly. But it’s unanimous, he is the best centre in the world, and has been ever since those days of running around for the Eels. Let’s just hope he gives it his all against the Maroons.

4. Michael Jennings – Admittedly, I haven’t watched many Panthers games this year, but all you need to have seen is the highlight reels to know that Michael Jennings is worthy of this spot. He could be the excitement machine that the Blues need to get us over the line. He’s strong, fast and skillful and I can’t wait to see what he can do against the all-star Cane Toad backline.

5. James McManus – Surprised? I am. He is one player that seems to have come out of nowhere to snag a wing spot, but the selectors have definitely gone for form over reputation this year. Gone are the Matt Kings and Luke Rooneys, it’s time for a new generation in wingers.

6. Terry Campese – This was one of the highly contested positions, but I think Campese was a shoo-in. Even if the Raiders have been pretty ordinary in the last couple of months, he’s a specialist 5/8 and has shown glimpses of the skill that he has (especially with that banana kick half volley on the weekend). Mullen was a possibility, but I’m glad the selectors have looked forward and given a chance to a player that could be in the Blue jumper for a long time to come

7. Peter Wallace – Look. I am not a huge fan of Wallace. I thought he was too young and inexperienced for Origin last year and I still think the same. Problem is, what other halfbacks do the Blues have to chose from? I’d go as far as to say that Brett Finch or Kimmorley should be halfback instead of Wallace, but it seems that the selectors are making every effort to look to the future. He does get the job done well for the Broncos though and maybe he can provide the Blues with some inner secrets to his Bronco teammates. If he does, he’s worth his weight in gold.

8. Brent Kite – I feel that Kite is here by default. He has a proven track record in representative matches, and even if he doesn’t set the world on fire week to week, he’s done enough to keep his place. I am not a massive fan, but if this Queanbeyan boy has a big game he’s very hard to stop. I just hope he decides to have an ‘on’ game next Wednesday.

9. Robbie Farah – As much as I hate to admit it to my Tiger’s supporting mate, Farah is easily the best hooker in the game. He has been for years, even when Buderus was hooker and captain of the Blues. Finally Farah gets a chance to show us his stuff at State level and he’ll probably make it on the boat to England at the end of the year as well. Looking forward to seeing his lethal darts from dummy half and bullet passes when we cross for many tries in this series.

10. Luke Bailey – Like Kite, Bailey was a certainty for the other Front Row position. Even if we have a relatively inexperienced team around them, it’s nice to know that the front rowers are experienced and reliable. I have always liked Bailey and he is very solid up front with the bonus of some ball playing skills.

11. Ben Creagh – It’s taken a while for me to accept that Hindmarsh is no longer a representative player. I thought that he should have been picked for last year’s series. But now I understand that he has to make way for the new breed of back rower. Ben Creagh is definitely a player that shows what second rowers should be doing nowadays. Running hard, offloading and tackling well out wide. He’s a class act.

12. Luke O’Donnell – O’Donnell is one of those players that I have liked for ages but has never seemed to reach his full potential. His name doesn’t seem to go away though and even at 28 he’s got what it takes at this level. This might be his last chance to prove himself and he’s not guaranteed to be in the Kangaroo tour later this year. Mind you, he’s also not guaranteed to be in Game 2. A lot at stake for him.

13. Paul Gallen – Gallen gets the Lock spot, because, really, who else is there? I think he’s a total tool of a person, but he’s a strong and gutsy player who probably deserves to be there even if he is playing in a club team that have looked more likely to win the spoon than win anything else this season. He’ll play his heart out for his state and that’s the main thing

Interchange
1. Craig Wing – Mr. Utility is there to cover up for the injuries that WILL happen. It’s inevitable. Farah, Wallace or Campese could slip on the Either Stadium surface and Craig Wing will be there to mop up. He does it well though, even if he will never be the force that he could have been.
2. Justin Poore – This debutant will be playing his first Origin, but most definitely not his last. He’s been playing out of his skin for the Dragons this season, and there’s every chance he’ll be moving to the Eels or Sharks in the near future. I would like to see him make an impact in this game, but it’ll be tough when you’re running towards Civoniceva.
3. Glenn Stewart/Luke Lewis (18th man) – Stewart probably won’t play because he is facing a ‘dangerous throw’ charge from the weekend, so let’s assume that Luke Lewis replaces him on the bench. I would much rather this anyway because I think Lewis is a freaking champion and deserves to be in the squad. For all I care Stewart can go and hang out with his brother on the sideline for the rest of his life..
4. Michael Weyman – The other big prop from the Dragons has been setting the world on fire with his powerful running this season. After barely striking a match at the Raiders he’s made a big turn around to get into the Origin team. He’s got a spot that not so long ago Willie (who?) Mason would have held, so he’s gonna wanna go better than him. But hey, that’s not too hard.

So there we have it. My thoughts on the Origin team.

Face it. We HAVE to win this year, otherwise the toads from up north win four series in a row.

We can’t allow that.

Brett, I am just going off past experience. Cooper has done little to nothing in attack for all the origins he has been there, and I see little reason why that would change this year.

JBE called QLD the filthy CAIN toads?? Well maybe he's right because that is what NSW is going to get a Caining. The CANE TOADS can all attack and defend so well. No doubt the referee's will be all blue - but that will only get QLD pissed off and JT and Locky will punch holes in the NSW defence. There will be some fighting to try to upset QLD but I think they will win that too.....roll on Wednesday.

I don't care what he's done, the blues need Brett Stewart back. In rep and club that boy pulled points out of his ass and just amazed everyone. that skill will be hard to find anywhere else. Nop doubt the filthy cain toads are going to cop a thumping this year....buit it's going to be a close one

can i say something lyon is a waste in the centres for manly he should be the 5-8 for them and if his kicking game improves he would be wearing the 6 not the 3. I don't see how campese is the 6 after he's play ordinary this year without lyon there at 6 the only other option is mullen him and kurt at the back there would smash us (maroons). go for us qlders though...

Campese kicks goals as well, so there's plenty of options there. I think Daley made the right comment last night. This team can win, but they will have to perform at their best. We all know what Queensland can do when they play at their best, so we'll need them to drop their game a bit. As we've also seen, they get better as the series goes on, so we need to grab our opportunities and win the 1st game like last year. And yeah, I remember that pass from Hayne, Tom. Not a shining light of his career, but he made up for it later in the game!

I think this team can do the job but obviously must fire on all cylinders. Hopefully this group can stay together for the whole series unlikely as that may be. Brent Kite is a key figure in our fortunes. He has to fire and go forward for us to have any chance. He has been around long enough in Origin that he has to dominate now. O'Donnell and Gallen bring some mongrel into the pack to match Crocker and Myles. Wallace will be steady as she goes although his lack of pace is a bit of a worry at this level. Not sure what to expect from Campese, he is a bit unpredictable which probably isn't a bad thing. Jennings was a must. The Blues have to score plenty of tries in the series to beat Qld and picking him was a good start. McManus has been in great form for the Knights so while a bolter I think he will go well. Farrah and Wing will be dangerous from dummy half. I assume Jamie Lyon will take the goal kicking responsibilities as Kurt Gidley IMO is not a front line goal kicker. He has enough on his plate as skipper.

Tom, I reckon Brett Morris might disagree with you about Cooper's attack, particularly in the last month..

Terry Kidd, I'll grant you Cooper is a decent defender, but he has the attacking prowess of a 3 legged donkey. He has done nothing for all the origins he's been there, and should have been tossed out a long time ago. I would be more inclined to agree with you on Gallen, he is a loose cannon and is just as likely to lose you a game as win it. I think Laffranchi and Monaghan can count themselves a bit unlucky, as can Lewis (although he has a good chance of getting a spot), especially considering he was done no favours by being 18th man for Australia on country origin week. Stewart is a better back rower than Luke Lewis, but I think Lewis would have done a better job than Wing at utility. As I said, Laffranchi probably deserved a spot, especially as he can play prop in a pinch. And mickrad, surely you will also remember Hayne's brilliant (cough) offload to Minichello...

funny how a name means nothing Mickrad until you add a picture ;-) Now I know you've lost your marbles about Lyon!! Hoffman's been around, but it's fair to say he's slipped in ratings; probably a victim of Melbourne's indifferent form, and the same can be said for Joel Monaghan. Have read that G.Stewart will fight his charge, which is hardly surprising given he was facing a one match ban anyway. Apart from a SOO debut, he's got nothing to lose..

I'm comfortable with the squad except for Lyon and Gallen. I agree Brett, Cooper should have been one of the centres picked and I would have gone for Waterhouse or Laffranchi over Gallen, but I would have dropped Creagh back to lock because he has more mobility. Lewis should replace Stewart.

Yes, my parochialism can get the better of me, it's true, but look out for Hayne. Remember his freakish Origin try a couple of years back?

I'm sorry but Jamie Lyon is not the best centre in the world.Hodges,Inglis and Folau (when played there) are way far in front of him while i would also put Tate in front as well.

Mickrad - you being a Parra supporter I would expect nothing else than a bagging of the Manly players in the squad. Lyons gets the exemption because he is ex-Parra, of course. Glenn Stewart is a class act and big contributor in Manly's premiership side of '08 and one of the best performers in Manly's '09 side. He will be a big loss if suspended just like his brother Brett due to injury. Brett is the only Blues player capable of matching Slater's freaky efforts for QLD and if fit he would have been the 1st player picked (moot point I know).

I beg to differ on the best centre. I think Jamie Lyon has the runs on the board as far as that position goes. Hodges has been hot/cold for a long time now, although Inglis is up there and it would line ball between them. Hey Brett, you're right, I totally forgot about Hoffman, where has he been this year? Why wasn't he in contention? Especially playing for the Blues coaches team and all. He's played for the Blues in their last 5 origin games as well and is now on the outer in favour for Gallen? Interesting..

This team will be smashed by the mighty QUEENSLANDERS...Campese will be smashed early and as to for wallace but farah being a tiger will lift them and the end result of the first game to be 30-18

I'm with Hoy, it's a very brave call suggesting Lyon is the best centre in the world, and it's nowhere near unanimous. Hodges and Inglis are a long way in front as the Australian centres, so there's two ahead of Lyon for starters. I've used a variation of this John Lennon line previously, but I don't even think Lyon is the best centre at Manly (and I don't particularly care for Steve Matai either). Anyway, he's been selected and good luck to him. He'll need it. I've said elsewhere that I'd be more comfortable if Cooper was one of the centres, and I don't particularly care who misses out to fit him in. Who else could play lock instead of Gallen?? Gee, where do you start. Laffranchi straight back into the back row, and O'Donnell to 13 would be the obvious one, and you could throw up Waterhouse, Hoffman, and Luke Lewis (who probably will play, as you've said Mickrad) who all would be more than suitable alternatives..

I don't think it is that unanimous about Jamie Lyon being the best centre in the world. Looks a good team. Could be some danger for the Maroons this year. Complacancy is the problem. If we (maroons) are on our game, we should do it, but if not, then this team can score points. On paper, our halves will run rings around them, and it looks good with Thurston hitting his best form in about 2 years. Hopefully the Maroons can win their 4th series in a row this year, but this Blues team is the building blocks for future years, much like the Maroons team from 3 years ago.
