Gold Coast chief Palmer determined to keep stars

Gold Coast United chairman Clive Palmer has issued a hands-off warning to overseas clubs chasing the A-League newcomers’ top players.

United have scored nine goals in their first two games to sit at the top of the table, underlining their tag of pre-season title favourites.

Johnny Warren Medal winner Shane Smeltz, who scored four times in Saturday’s 5-0 win over North Queensland, has once again been linked with a move to Turkish side Genclerbirligi. Defender Adam Griffiths was last week sold to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Shabab.

However, Palmer, who has declared his side will go through the season unbeaten, has denied the club are struggling to keep hold of their players, and said he will not accept any offers from potential suitors.

“None of our contracted players are leaving and no further transfers during the current season will be considered for any amount of money,” Palmer said on Monday.

“Any offers we receive will be rejected out of hand. The final decision on the acquisition or transfer of any players rests with the board of directors at Gold Coast United.

“Neither (coach) Miron Bleiberg nor anyone else will influence that decision process.”
