Wallabies will bring discipline to All Blacks clash

By David Pocock / Roar Rookie

The All Blacks at ANZ stadium on Saturday is a game the Wallabies need no motivating for in order to get fired up about. They don’t get much bigger than this – and it’s a must-win to keep our Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup hopes alive.

It’s fantastic to be back in Australia after our last two matches were away.

We’ve had a good ten day camp leading into this game, working hard on the areas we identified that we need to improve on.

The intensity at training has been right up there – with James O’Connor and Phil Waugh even getting into a bit of a scuffle during one of the contact drills.

There was really nothing in it – just a heat of the moment push and shove (luckily for little James!). I actually think it’s a good thing to have the odd push and shove at training between players – it’s certainly a good sign that players are pushing each other to train hard, and once training is over its back to being mates.

One of the great things about sport is that you usually get a chance the next week to move on and change your fortunes – and that is something that we are all determined to do come Saturday night.

There’s a real sense among the group that we’re moving forward (albeit slower than we’d obviously like) and are determined to get into the “winning habit” after losing two games that we know we could have played a lot better in.

The next three weeks are very exciting.

It’s New Zealand this weekend and then two games against South Africa (in Perth and Brisbane) and you get the feeling that this is our chance to move forward as a group and prove that we can win games back-to-back in the Tri-Nations, bringing that composure and discipline we have probably lacked in the first two games.

All the hard work has been done for the week on the training field and now all is left is to prepare ourselves mentally so we’re ready to come out firing.

If we can bring that composure under pressure and discipline I mentioned, as a team, I think it’ll be a good night.

David, Gents One last point of frustration for me. There are plenty of well intentioned comments about the scrum. I think they are a good attempt to find something positive in the game. And, we SHOULD look for positives or just give up and watch AFL. The scum was very poor. Yep you heard it here first. Poor old Hammer has lost his marbles I hear you say. Well in my day (some time ago) the scum was supposed to stay straight! provide good clean ball! be stable, and if possible be disruptive on their ball? Did we provide ANY of this? I think at best we may have reached 20% of some of these. How would you like to be a 9 at the back of the scrum last night.... Eerrr yah give me the horrors thinking about it. Yep the scrum was very poor.

As per another post LAS The Boks have got their S&%T together this year and they are taking every opportunity, and good on them. They are however facing a very poor side in the Australian team. So much for Deans the wonder coach! Australian Rugby is a debarkle and has been for years. Gitts to 9, Barnes 10 ETC, ETC so what? the 4,5, 8 don’t push in scrums, the LO is a complete mess, two players from 1 to 8 had good caries last night. We have no presence at the breakdown, can’t stay on out feet, can’t offload without going to ground. Blah blah Blah and so it continues…. We are without doubt the softest, least skilled, least focused of the southern hemisphere teams and probably the same in the top 10. I am sick to death of the excuses. We are pathetic for a national team. I don’t even mind losing if WE play well. Good on the Boks they learned some seriously great lessons playing the Lions and it has carried on into the Tri Nations. If you want to save the world. piss of player power, pay them what they are worth (we can’t do any worse), bring back tough skills based coaches that can coach RUGBY UNION. Oh and give back the money you took from the Australian and SA fans for that pile of crap last night. We want TEST’s. not training runs.

That's how I saw it LeftArmSpinner & by all means disagree with me but do not purport to speak for "the faithful", you can only speak for yourself.

David, I respect you as person, as a sportsman, as a Wallaby, as a national representative and as a great rugby player now and in the future. I am taking this opportunity to speak to you and hence to the Wallabies direct and in a precise and concise form. I have been around the block a few times, on the sporting fields of mny sports in many countries as players, ref and coach, and in business and in life. The Wallabies are severely lacking and wasting an opportunity to build a golden era for rugby in Australia. The Emperor has no clothes. Someone has to say it and I am taking this opportunity to say it to you. Do not accept the current play as "we are getting closer." You are kidding only yourself, not the Rugby spectator, not even my U15 son. Last night was embarassing and should be recognised privately and publically as such. 1.Draw on your own personal adversity bring other players who have experienced adversity (i.e. Luke Burgess's character building path to pro rugby) 2.As said previously by others, don't weather the storm, be the storm, not just at the physical parts of the game but in using the ball in attack. 3. Dont accept anything else until this occurs week in week out. 4. Be honest as a team with your performances. 5. Research the best teams in the world of sport, some of them Wallabies teams. Learn from them and their ability to keep playing to win no matter the situation or score or minutes on the clock. Never, never, never give up when you have that Wallabies jersey on. By this I mean, train to play overwhelming, courageous, confident, uber competitive rugby that is as regular and constant as the waves in a hurricane: wave upon wave until the opposition give in. The successful teams all possess above points 1-5. 6. The best teams often revolutionise the game. Aust cricket sped up the game by scoring runs quicker (with some increased risk) and winning more games. Former Wallabies teams did this: The Ella era reverse engineered a team around excellence across the park and really slick back line skills. McQueen's team retained and recycled posession for long periods. 7. Redefine rugby and define the current Wallabies with your own innovation. When every one else is playing the supposedly (but not) low risk, field position, rugby, develop the ability to counter-attack, retain possession and turn your opponents' tactics to your own benefit. When they realise what is happening, they will be powerless to do anything about it and will have to continue to give you the ball so that you can continue to attack and out score them. Read Geoff Mould's recent article on how to do it: i.e. to play running rugby. its simple, very enjoyable and produces more points than any other tactic. 8. Finally, if you do become Wallabies captain, some of "your team" are already in the current Wallabies squad and being permanently psychologically damaged, crueling your period in office before it has even begun. 9. Dont hesitate to give this thread to Robbie and other Wallabies.

Unfortunately, the Wallabies haven't got the message about discipline. Another 5 penalties conceeded.

An engrossing game marked by courageous defence and passionate commitment but also poor tactical kicking by the Wallabies. What worries me though is that I think the Kiwis have a lot more room for improvement than we do. Has Al Baxter played his last match?

I think the Pieter-bashing is a tad unfair. That's a view from a patriotic South African isn't it? Burger's eye-gounging was something that shouldn't happened on a rugby field. He should have got longer ban. Pietersen's clothes-line of Cowan plain stupid. Just as was Giteau's tackle on Fourie du Preez... and killing of the ball by any player (no matter who he is playing for) when the opposition is in a try-scoring position is unsportmanlike. So are you Wallabies supporters going to try to justify it ... just maybe if you patriotic enough, I guess. Thanks David Pockock for the insight, that's the way you see it, that's the way you write it ... nothing wrong with it.

Please, the Springboks couldn't score a try if the opposition stood still with their hands in the air. Every time the Springboks tackle a back they drop an elbow or shoulder into the player. They hit every kicker late.

Sorry David , the previous comment was meant to be on another place. QC and Damo Comment was Meant on whinging about the tryless games which i see is related to rather giving a penalty away than having a try scored. Union is about forwards and the backline. Not touch rugby(Coming off the Field with nice clean pants) or League. I see one-eyed views regarding citing. Free speach ? Still - Enjoy the game tomorrow - it will be good even if there are not as many tries scored as you would like to have. Lol and i hope Giteau drinks a Red Bull or 2

To me David Pocock has just given a pledge, and I'll hold him to it. This does not necessarily apply to other player/writers of whatever sporting persuasion.

Pieter, What a load of rubbish and vitrol you have written. Here you have a wallaby taking the time to give an insight from a players perspective and all you can do is attack the very people who support him. Grow up mate your only embarrassing yourself and doing a great dis-service to your country. Like Damo has said there is many things I would like to say to you about your team and the filthy tactics that have used lately Peterson springs up like a clothesline and I really don't want to put my fingers into a burger oops I mean pie. I'm looking forward to a great spectacle on Saturday night, no other test match can compare to the might of a Bledisloe

Is it just me or every week results in exactly the same drivel coming from players, coaching staff and to a large extent the media?

Unfortunate for David that his teammates have not shown the composure he is so sure they will bring to the game. One of the most undisciplined Wallaby outfits in many years. He has nothing to base his assumption on and it will probably be their demise against the All Blacks now that Carter is back. He is one of the most steady players under pressure and will exploit their fragility even better than Steyn.

Pieter, struggling for a polite response to your barrage. When you call Wallaby supporters "arrogant whingers", is it because you believe we should not comment on a game or it's refereeing except to declare how great the Springboks are? On one hand you demand that we accept all ref decisions good and bad but on the other you have a tired and almighty whinge about how certain Springboks are treated by citing commissioners This is still a nation that allows free speech . Please be polite enough to wipe your shoes at the door before you walk in amd kick us with them. Look let's just cut to the chase - the Springboks are the greatest rugby team in the world ! There now do you feel better ?
