Sydney Rovers FC launched as twelfth A-League club

Sydney Rovers FC – 12th A-League team

Twelfth A-League license holders, Sydney Rovers have made significant strides this week by selecting their club name, colours and logo.

The team will be decked out in red, white, and black, similar to the old Blacktown City colours (in respect to the Sydney Rover’s Chairman, who had close ties with the club), to be worn in a vertical pattern.

As part of an over-riding philosophy to consult fans at a grassroots level, market research undertaken by the club suggested that fans did not a prefix with ‘West’ or ‘Western’ it. As they note: “You’ve told us you want the club to represent all of Sydney and that you know that the club is going to be based in the West of Sydney.”

The club has asked the FFA to register the name, colours and logo. So the big decisions have been made.

What do you think about their choices?

Rubbish. It should always include West or Western. I'm not ashamed of where i come from. Parramatta stadium is also a joke. WE should be the first team to play in a stadium fitting the a-league. Having 10,000 people in a15,000 capacity stadium is much more impacting than playing in a stadium with 40,000 empty seats. Make playing in the west, the heartland of Australian football a real challenge.

I think the logo is POOR at best! It looks like a cheap clip art. Someone with the most basic computer must have mashed it together. A proper graphic designer would never create something like that! look at the sydney fc logo. much more creative. They should certainly fix this. But I am very both sydney do not have stupid names like roar or fury!!!!

I dont like the idea of NOT having "west" or "western" in the name.. Sydney FC already covers all of Sydney.. We dont need another one, its just stupid.. its like having Melbourne FC & Melbourne Victory.. sounds ridiculous! If you ask me, most of sydney FC's fans are from WEST sydney, therefore it'll be nice for them to have a team to represent JUST them.. Im sure quite a lot of Sydney FC fans are going to "transfer" over to Sydney Rovers anyway.. but Id like to see it called WEST Sydney Rovers! though I dont really like the "Rovers" part, I suppose thats going to stay either way..

The fact they're so reluctant to have any allusion hinting to being representative of the west of sydney in the moniker just adds more stigma and shows that the people up top seem to think it's some horrible label to be smeared with. I'm damn proud to be born and raised in western sydney and would take it's lesser luxuries over anywhere else in sydney all day every day, because i know there's so much more heart out here. So don't give us spin about wanting to secure a bigger fanbase, from where else? Did they forget about their other club in the region? and if they don't want to follow a team with west in the name, i'm inclined to have the opinion of stuff them we don't want you to follow us. That venting aside, I am very happy with the thus far traditional approach to the logo and name (as opposed to some ridiculous name that's a verb that speaks to the kids on their skateboards or a natural phenomena, and a colour scheme of 12 different shades with names like magenta and turquoise that some art school drop out told them is edgy and suave and apparently represents some bullsh*t idea of a picturesque portrait of the land or some crap like that) and already pledge allegiance to the club, although i would really, really love it were they to be called the western or west sydney rovers, but hey you can't please all the people all the time. In my opinon thumbs up to the FFA and the Rovers management, albeit with a hint of "it's about time" for what they've presented thus far. I for can't wait for the 2011/12 season to kick off when i'll finally have a team to suppport that i feel part of. And yes it is very similar to st. kildas colours and logo, so lucky they play in a totally different code or else people might get confused...

Mr Cheese, if you can find me a meercat or an elephant in the wilds of Australia then I'll draw the design myself.

RedB - don't stress. The fact that this team will be playing real football, with a proper round ball, might be a slight hint to people...

"The standard of the A-League isn't decent yet" ??????????????????????????????????????? Its not EPL or La Liga standard sure, but to say its "not decent" is drawing a long bow. I see periods of play in the A-League that would be thoroughly competitive with mid and lower ladder teams in France's Ligue 1, my new 'home' league....

im 26 years old, and spent my first 24 years of it in western sydney. (penrith) in the passed 5 years I have always supported Sydney FC. Now im in a tough situation, with this new west sydney team. I'd love to go for this west sydney team, but my pride gets in the way and im gonna have to stay with Sydney FC, cant change teams now. I do agree with everything being derived from england, the songs, the names etc etc. its annoying! Its gonna be a great derby match though, hopefully similar to that of Milwall v West Ham hahaha though we won't be using knives, just empty vb stubbies!! haha

i think the logo is fantastic. Im a sky blues supporter through and though (though I did grow up out west sydney penrith pride haha). but i like this logo. very traditional, nothing too fancy. unlike the mariners or roar logo (too american if u asked me). But anyways, the name of the team is a bit annoying. I do agree that there needs to be something else to differentiate the two sydney teams. I dont think the word Rovers does it for me. Sydney FC & Sydney Rovers, "whats the geographical difference?" some overseas supports may ask. People from overseas wouldn't even know the difference in location, only us australia supporters. my argument is, in he EPL you have Liverpool and Everton, both merseyside clubs, but both in different locations and both with different names. I believe the other sydney team needs to have a different name, and not have Sydney in the title at all....but anyways its always great to see the league getting stronger and stronger...again love the logo!

as supporters, when we bring the flags to the game we can make our own logo's and add in the "West" part all we want in our signs and chants. im from Ireland originally, grew up in Blacktown and i like the name Rovers, but would be very proud to have "West" in the name aswell. these are the Blacktown Demon colours people, aswell as gay.f.l. st kilda or n.r.l. bears!

Well, There a lot of red-white-black teams in the world. In South America, without much research, I can remember: São Paulo FC (BRA), CR Flamengo (BRA), CA River Plate (ARG), CA Chacarita Juniors (ARG), C Estudiantes LP (ARG), etc. Not to mention that the team could always dress like Manchester United: red shirt, white short and black socks. So there are a lot of inspitational sites around the world that could be used...

Could not disagree more. That is truly shameful, that you've a chip on your shoulder - about "west" - placed there by others! Headed to the Gold Coast, well, 'nuff said ... stigma?? Only the ignorant don't know the fabulous diversity of the west. To think somehow it's all just one mass of fibro housing out here - mate open your eyes! Let us have a western team that we can be proud of and it will get colossal support. No love for the antiseptic Rovers.

Obviously you haven't grown up with the stigma that we are forced to deal with everytime we say "yeah that's out in the western suburbs". On a flight up to Goldy the other day I was asked had it affected me . . . keeping the word West out of the name is a must.
