Roy Jones Jr, Danny Green a real let down

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

I have just paid my fifty bucks and waited hours for what I thought was going to be the greatest boxing match on Australian soil. The eight times World Champ, Roy Jones Jr, versus Australian warrior, the three time world champion, Danny Green.

Unfortunately, what I witnessed appeared to be a pathetic sideshow. The punch that supposedly knocked Roy Jones Jr to the canvas, actually glanced off his shoulder.

Let me just put some perspective on this: I am a fan of both fighters, but seriously guys, this was a joke. There is, I suppose, the possibility that Roy Jones Jr did not train at all for this fight.

But watch it for yourself and tell me I’m wrong.

I’m very disappointed.

Jones was not too proud to claim the IBC light heavyweight title when he beat Hanshaw. That was the last title he held. Nobody has bothered fighting for it since 2007.

I read a comment from an american sports writer who was puzzled about the event and wondered why Roy Jones Jnr would fight for an obscure title such as the one held by Danny Green. If the fight was fixed, he no longer needs to wonder for now we have the pieces of the puzzle. " Was he pound for pound" sounds more like " Dollar for Dollar"

Scenario : Jones gets hit by Green, clean shot.....or lucky punch whatever.....These things happen. Scenario 2 : Odds of Danny Green knocking Roy Jones Jnr out in first round in American Betting Arena 100:1, Jones offered large some say...double what he'd get from Hopkins fight to take a dive....mmmmm.......huge payday.....very little damage...and what less than three minutes of acting.....sounds plausible to me. Take a look at the hits he got from Jeff Lacey......Now if you get the Aussie fight, slow it down and of the forty or so punches that Danny Green threw to finish the fight, I counted less then five or six getting through....when you see Jones is supposed to be dazed...you will notice that he evades punches by taking a large percentage on the gloves....." Guess we will never know !" " Sorry to steal your glory Danny, but I think you were the pawn in a well executed fix"

Something sure smelled fishy at that fight. I was at the fight and also watched the rplays many times on Youtube. Very hard to say what exactly happened. That punched rolled off Jones' shoulder, so it may have lost some power by the time it hit his head. Even if that punch was good, I have never seen a WORLD TITLE FIGHT stopped like that. He could have continued and chances are he would have recovered between rounds. That kind of stoppage only happens in amateur fights. I think either the fight was fixed or Green had a really really "good hometown advantage", if you know what I mean. If the fight was fixed then, Jones would have considered it his big final pay day. $10 Mil for the fight, a couple mil under the table and a couple more mil from the betting. Green's career gets boosted and jones retires with a big pay day, bot too mention the boosting of popularity of boxing within Australia. Either way, it was very fishy indeed.

You mustn't know much about RJJ if you were surprised by his left hand being down "inviting" green in... In his prime Jones Jr was famous for doing this as a taunt to other fighters as he would then skilfully evaded all their attempts to take advantage of the wide opening he was giving them and the clock them with vicious combos as soon as they missed. The problem for Jones is that as he's gotten older his reflexes and speed aren't at a level where he can get away with that kind of arrogance anymore.

Go ahead with your fantasy, Bill. I could not be bothered discussing it with you any more. Jones/Hopkins will not happen. Jones would have to be mad to fight again. He got to that time in a fighter's life where he realised it is over.

The guy is 40, maybe saw the end coming and took a dive ... maybe not, i really dunno, just my instinct tells me he did or he severely underestimated DG At any rate Dannys local pub and sponsor (Greenwood tavern) which has won many awards as being the top pub for this that and the other decided not to take the fight as the fee 3.5k was deemed to much. This is what annoys me about the fight game, the blatant greed by promoters, anyway did the Greenwood know something that we did not. By the time you got a beer from the bar the fight would have been over for ten minutes.

Jones did see the punch...hence the rolled shoulder. Lets see what transpires viz a viz Hopkins/Green/Jones fights. Just because something is in the public domain doesn't make it so. You are offended because of your own integrous values...which are unfortunately lacking in boxing. Many boxers have declared reitement after a loss...only to return again.

How could there be a "bigger agenda"? The Hopkins fight was conditional on Jones beating Green and Hopkins beating Ornelas. That is in public domain, if you search boxing sites it is there. Jones said after the fight he was going back into retirement. As for the punch that knocked Jones down not being solid, experienced boxers I trained with in the sixties and seventies always told me that a KO depended more on the boxer hitting his opponent properly than hitting him hard. It is the one you do not see coming that will get you. If I seemed to offend people I am sorry, but as someone who fought prelims many years ago and made good friends among fighters I find the whole idea of a man sacrificing a title or a chance at a title for the pittance of a bribe, I find the whole idea offensive and ridiculous. A journeyman fighter may take it easy in a fight, but proud championship class fighters like Roy Jones would never come at that and there is not enough money to make him do so. Green was just the better fighter on the night.

John, if Bernard Hopkins is fighting at Light Heavyweight wy would the outcome of the Jones vs Green fight (Cruiserweight) have any bearing at all? Everyone is free to agree/disagree or throw their own opinions up, that is what is so great about the Roar. Not sure why you feel you need to write others off though.

That may be so,but its amazing how often in boxing there is a bigger agenda behind the scenes. We may see a reconfiguration of a Green/Hopkins/Jones trilogy to garner even more money! If we look at the fight on what happened, its fairly clear it wasnt a solid shot...jones rolled his shoulder, and even when "hurt", was able to take virtually all of Greens punches on the gloves. Who knows...I'm not saying it was a fix, just that I wouldnt be surprised.

Why on earth would Roy Jones take a dive against Danny Green when he knew the loss meant he missed out on the big money fight against Hopkins? Why would he rob himself of ten million dollars? Jones beating Green was one of the conditions of the Jones/Hopkins fight going ahead. billoddie would know about as much about "what goes on in boxing circles" as I would about heart surgery. Stick to comedy, Bill! Bever Fever probably needed the exercise and Jack's Dad will probably find Jack leaving home soon. One more time for the sceptics. Green was weight drained against Mundine. He was a stone heavier than that on Wednesday night. Maybe most of you are too young to remember what Luis Rodriguez did to Tony Mundine when Tony was on the way up and Luis was supposed to be washed up. It was shorter than Wednesday night's fight.

i live on the Gold Coast, and a (recent) former world champion (who resides here) was asked about the Green/Jones fight. His reply? "Danny's got it. It's in the bag". Also it is well known in boxing circles that if and when American fighters take a dive, it is in the first or second rounds. Why prolong the punishment? Jones has taken harder shots that that in sparring!

Jones had nothing to gain by taking a dive, it puts at risk his big money fight with Hopkins. But that is the risk in boxing - each fighter is potentially 10 seconds away from a knock out loss. Give Green some credit he has the power to put his opponents to sleep - 28 wins with 25 by KO.

3.5k for a pub/tavern to take the fight ....pathetic, nothing about boxing suprises me, more rigged than horse racing.

Yet so many (see above) still treat it like a sport. I am constantly bemused by the amount of people who should know better expressing surprise at anything that happens in boxing.

Danny Green is in it for the money so it was most likely fixed. I still can't fathom the Green retirement thing, then doing the rounds with his autobiography then coming out of retirement. These boxers all think they are in a Rocky movie and it's the only sport that I wouldn't gamble on as it's a complete take!! Last night proved it yet again.

If there are any 'authorities' in this game with any credibility they wouldn't allow the Hopkins-Jones fight to proceed
