Has Buddy Franklin finally lost his mojo?

I know we’re only two rounds in, and I will be the first person to put my hand up and admit I was wrong, but it feels like Buddy Franklin has lost confidence in himself, his body, or those around him.

For starters, he is leading to the pockets and the boundary line more and more.

The Hawks midfield will be bringing the ball through the corridor, but then send the inside 50 out wide towards a Buddy lead.

Now, I know that some of the delivery on the weekend was very poor and out of his control, but in 2008, Buddy would lead straight up the middle and demand the footy, take the ball out in front, and then wheel around onto his raking left boot and kick the goal.

What has happened?

This to me is a sign of low confidence. Where is the ‘mojo’?

The other trait that crept into his game was a little bit of laziness. Instead of pushing up the ground or doubling back for a second lead, he is playing closer to the square, and as often as possible, will call for the ball to be kicked in long.

By that stage, though, the Cat’s defence had pounced for an easy spoil.

Now don’t get me wrong. He was serviceable in his first game back this year: 16 possessions and two goals including one telling kick from outside 50.

However, Buddy set his own standards in 2008 winning the Coleman Medal and now he has to live up to them. Hawthorn is depending on it.

He will, of course, be better for the run and it’s fair to suggest his match fitness would have been a little down, so he will improve again this week. But will he be able to regain the magic he displayed in the Hawks’ premiership year?

The way he used to dance around opponents and fend off with the ‘don’t argue’ was mesmerising to watch.

Last week, though, he either got caught in a tackle or ran too far with the ball. Something feels not quite right.

I only hope for Hawks fans that he can somehow find the ‘mojo’ he seems to have lost, and quickly.

The draw doesn’t get any easier for the Hawks, playing the Bulldogs on Sunday at Etihad Stadium, and if ever they need a big game from their superstar forward, it’s this weekend.

Who could forget Buddy’s eight goal performance against the Bulldogs in that final in 2008?

Playing on Brian Lake, one of the game’s best and strongest defenders, not even Lake could find a way to stop the famous Buddy burst.

Again, we can assume he will have to lower Lake’s colours, but it will take something special to do so.

As a combination, the Franklin and Roughead duo feels a little less formidable as a result.

Roughy booted four last week and Buddy two, not a bad return. But they need to fully fire together for the Hawks to push deep into September.

In many ways, if the twin towers were to fall over, so too would the Hawks premiership aspirations.

Everyone in the football world wants to see Buddy Franklin at his sizzling best, and if he has lost his ‘mojo’ for whatever reason, let’s hope it returns sooner rather than later.

I heard that Elvis is still alive too! Doesn't mean that its true. I think you will find the truth is that he hardly every goes out and is a very well settle young man! And if you have seen his girlfriend, you wouldn't blame him!

In that respect, I think his mojo is fine!

I have heard Buddy leads a very active social life away from the footy ground. Don't think that ever helps with a player's focus and commitment.

It would be very sad if this has happened, but it has happened before - and at Hawthorn ! In the 70s/80s ? there was a player John 'Bomber' Hendrie who was an absolute gun ! But at age 26 he just seemed to lose it - and at 27 he was off the list . . . ???

Of all the things that could be possibly wrong, loss of confidence is unlikely to be one of it. Over confidence maybe!

Perhaps his feelings are still hurt from everyone calling him a fatty boombah last year! That'll do your confidence in every time.

Colin, I'll put you at ease, my mojo is well and truly alive and well! I too loved the goal from outside 50, I'm a massive Buddy fan, but my observation from the game was he looks a little frustrated, possibly lacking in confidence and seemed unable or unwilling to compete like usual. Yes it is just one game, but what else do we have to judge him on? You say there was plenty of the buddy of old, well the Buddy of old would have kicked 6 and won the game of his own boot. you tell me, what is a pass mark for Buddy this year?

1 game.... HE'S PLAYED 1 GAME MATE! And in that game he showed plenty of the Buddy of old, including kicking a Sausage from 50m out on the boundary. Has Justin Rodski lost his mojo? Did Justin Rodski ever have a mojo in the first place?

the other thing forgot to mention that the other big difference between 2008 and 2009/10 are that more sides are using zones so that leading up the center sees you smack bang in the middle of the zone. I haven't watched the game over again, but have a feeling that Geelong played in front of him a lot and the tactic was to try to body his opponent to own the back position and mark that way. Also, if they would pay him a free once in a while, that wouldn't hurt his form either! (yes, the comment of a badly one-eyed hawks fan).

Don't get ahead of yourself yet. Its one game. He played fine. Had a very good first half and struggled in the second half (when the whole team struggled some what). Shouldn't be forgotten that his partner in crime is doing pretty good demanding the ball as well and last, they were playing the Cats! Get back to me in a month!

It seems to me he is one of those athletes with heaps of natural talent but doesn't work hard enough to make it all come together.
