The toughest decisions made by directors of football clubs are definitely in the hard times: whether or not they should fire the coach or give him more time?

Sydney Olympic has been the story of Australian football this year, with all the positive developments in 2010: securing Belmore Sports Ground for the long term, building offices at the ground, full time staff, Mark Bosnich as a Board Director,sSelling over 750 season tickets from 150 the year before, and all this as they want to be in the A-League.

This new start was met with a talented squad with an average age of 23, including Dim Petratos, Mathew Mayora, Chris Traintis, Anthony Doumanis, Andre Gumprecht, Paul Henderson and Emmanuel Giannaros.

However, the appointment of inexperienced coach Pat Marando was questioned by many. Regardless, the Olympic head office felt it was a smart appointment and gave a very successful youth coach the go.

Pat Marando is still the big talking point around the traps, with Olympic fans, and as he lives week by week. Win or be fired is where it’ss at and maybe this was the fire needed for the team to start performing.

One man in his first season of coaching that comes to mind is the great Sir Alex Ferguson, nearly sacked in the first round of his first season at Manchester United. Look at him now!
