Akmal wants apology: report

Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal wants an unconditional apology from his former national team bosses for accusing him of match-fixing during this year’s winless tour of Australia.

“They should produce evidence of match fixing against me, otherwise they should apologise to me unconditionally,” Akmal told leading Urdu-language daily Jang before leaving for commitments in England.

Both then coach Intikhab Alam and tour manager Aaqib Javed raised suspicions of match fixing in a leaked video of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s inquiry committee.

Alam had said he was flabbergasted after Akmal missed a run out of Shane Watson during the Sydney Test and later heard stories of match fixing.

Akmal said if he was involved in match fixing in Australia “why did both coaches include him in the five one-day internationals and a twenty20 international?”

Akmal, who also dropped three catches during the Sydney Test, said he was going through tough times since the coaches accused him of match fixing.

“It’s difficult for me to go out of home because people pass various remarks,” he said. “The accusations have tarnished my image and put a stain on it.”

Akmal plans to meet PCB chairman Ijaz Butt after visiting England and will seek his approval to take legal action against Alam and Javed.

“If they don’t apologise on these fabricated allegations, I will certainly go to the court.”

He said that in the past great wicketkeepers like Wasim Bari, Moin Khan and Rashid Latif also dropped catches in international matches, “but it doesn’t mean that whenever a player dropped a catch he is involved in match fixing.”
