Even with the mass cull, the Storm can still win it

By M1tch / Roar Guru

If you have a strong spine, then you have a strong team. When comparing the best current NRL teams or teams of the past, the positions that are looked at are the three players that will touch the ball most during the course of the 80 minutes.

This is the fullback, the halfback and the hooker.

And when you throw in the premier centre in the game, it’s fair to say the Storm still have a formidable combination that can take them to Premiership glory.

And this time legally.

Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk, Cameron Smith and Greg Inglis are the men who you can build a team around. The Storm, in a way, are starting again, reportedly shedding ten players to fit under the salary cap.

Loyalty is something that is often forgotten about in rugby league, but these players have been adamant from the beginning of this Salary Cap investigation that they wanted to stay.

Offers have been coming from other NRL teams, Super League teams, rugby union teams and even
the AFL. But like the fans of the club, they are sticking with the team in its time of crisis.

The club will shed many players and the Storm’s scandal is another clubs’ gain, with the cut players joining rival NRL clubs and heading over to the English Super League.

But the demise of the Storm has been greatly exaggerated. The club will start with the rest of the pack in 2011, but still have four of the best players in the game and will push for their second NRL premiership.

In all this supposition of the Broncos past team caps, there is of course a common denominator. News Ltd are the owners of both these clubs, someone 'grassed' on Storm, where will the next News Ltd 'Leak' come from.

Barry, Norrie has become the Storm's best prop so they probably would win a premiership with 21 of him! But I get your point. Not even Bellamy could quickly fashion a dominant pack from rejects and youngsters.

They should get rid of one of the 'fab 4' - otherwise they're in a situation of the balance of the team being cheap/second rate. Trying to preserve the top 4 also reeks of defiance - the sort of childish defiance of a 2 yr old kid who won't fess up when he's done something wrong. The Storm should put it's hand up and say 'fair cop - we release one our best players and make room enough in our cap for a more balanced te structure' - and in the process move to a structure mire like the others clubs who are not cheating , or other clubs who can not afford to cheat. The message has not hit home at the Storm - they're being childish and their defiance shows they don't have any scruples. Coach as well as players.

Albie, I didn't say the Storm rort isn't a disgrace. Of course it is. But is it more disgraceful to "get away with it over an extended period" than to be found out earlier? What is annoying is the hypocrisy of some of the other clubs. The Raider's cheating helped finance 10 Origin stars and a premiership and if they weren't found out and hadn't gone broke I presume they would have continued the deception just as the Bulldogs in 2001 planned to exceed the cap by $2 million over 3 years. There is no proof in regards to the Broncos - who assembled a near-full representative team for a number of years - but when I hear: "I am a staunch Broncos supporter and have always pondered how the Storm could afford such big name players[!] Now it is evident. CHEATERS.", i can't help but ponder.

The disgrace comes from the deception and the extreme lengths to rort the system and get away with it over an extended period of time. To try and compare that to the Raiders in the 90's is pretty ridiculous. To point the finger at the Broncos without proof is also ridiculous.

How about we stick to the proven cheats and not point fingers to try and divert the blame?

Regardless of the strength of 'the spine' the storm won't win a comp with no muscle. With the Fab 4 on 2.1 mill, that leaves about 2.1 mill for the other 21 ie 100k per player. No ones going to win the comp with 21 Bryan Norries. Dragons were minor premiers last year and leading easy this year, had to let players go at the end of last season because of cap pressure but now have found $$$ to splash for Gasnier. What a joke ! ! !

Jay, it was interesting that Canberra chairman John McIntyre called for the termination of all Storm contracts because: "we had a salary cap situation in 1991 and all of our contracts were ruled null and void". Amusing how clubs label rorting by other teams as a disgrace while their own is a 'situation'. He failed to mention that Canberra still have the title for 1990 - the year the rorting took place. It is also difficult to accept that the Storm of 2006, a team of relative youngsters and 4 Origin reps, were exceeding the cap while the premiers Brisbane, with 10 Origin reps, were not.

I think Inglis might end up at the Broncos to be honest. To get the Storm back on track, breaking up is the hardest thing to do. ? Now where have i heard that line. :) If they break-up, then we can all move on, the longer they delay the inevatable, the more pain for the club.

You'd probably need to amend existing contracts and logde them with the NRL, who wouldnt register it.

They won premierships in 2007 and 2009... If in those year they were over by, say $300k... thats about 7.5% over.... Noting that most clubs go over each year, especially when they start using people outside of their 25. Look at that in isolation, then is appears to be ok. What would the NRL do if they found out Gold Coast was over $300k last year? Give them a fine.... What would the NRL do if they found out the Cowboys are $300k over this year? Given them a fine. Why should that change if a club has won a premiership? They fined the roosters for overpaying Craig Wing. The chooks went onto three straight gf (how was that team under the cap?). It seems that they're treating the storm differently. Poor leadership, conflicts of interest, inconsistent penalties. Get these dinosaurs out and get a truly independent commission in!

Mitch, no doubt you've seen the stories today that the 'Big Four' have spoken to the club about taking py cuts for next year, and the NRL has essentially said that it will look at any proposal to get Melbourne legal for 2011. Now I don't want to come across as cynical, but the first thought I had on hearing this last night was this: What would stop the 4 stars and the Storm agreeing to say $150K pay cuts from next year, but while making them look like charity superheroes for "taking one for the team", actually paying them that "pay cut" this year?? It's not as if they can lose any more than they have for this year, so why not front-load some contracts now??

I would assume the amounts got bigger as the years go on..ie 1.3 mil next year..so probably started at $200k and then rose With the big 4 the Storm will be right up there and it will be legal so booing fans would just be jealous ;)

What I want to know is how much the Storm were over when they won their premierships... Ok - so they say $3.2m over 6 years, but that includes $1.2m for the NEXT season. The roosters won the comp in 2002 with an illegal squad and were only fined. If the Storm were only above the cap by a similar amount, their premierships should be re-instated. The thing that really gets me about the NRL punishment is the lack of consistency. All previous salary cap roarts and breaches have had a propsective penalty, never retrospective. The Bulldogs and the Warriors were docked point going forward. Im ok with the current years scapping of point and make sure that they start at a -4 point handicap next season, but if the breaches were only minor, they should be fine, but not stipped for their premiership. I can understand why storm supported would be filthy with the NRL. As a knights fan, I hope next year they win the minor premiership and the GF infront of 80,000 booing fans.. That would be some story.

Well said Mr Cool, Some of the fan's of other clubs are kidding themselves if they think the Storm are alone.I suspect they are dreading the next few years when the Storm have something to play for.

That's COOL STG coming from Dragons fan, think you need to look in your own backyard. --- " Dragons under the salary cap -- What salary cap.!!!!!!". Gasnier on match and deferred payments -- I wonder, sounds like some backdoor activities there too. I better not mention the bunch of under achievers that played for Dragons whilst Brownie was coach, If that team were not over the cap, then neither are we!!. But I forgot, some teams seem to have special treatment to keep them alive.
