Houdini escape for the Wallabies

By JB / Roar Rookie

What a game! What a finale! Once again, the Wallabies nearly lost a game that appeared won. But, this time, luck was on their side despite the stupidity of Saia Fainga’a (have we finally seen the last of him under the Wallaby jersey? I hope so).

But at times, it was comical. How can we lose the game? Let’s try the falcon, and the over the head pass to the dead-goal line…

And what a difference a week makes. Robbie Deans has finally used his bench to full benefit. Burgess created havoc whenever he had the ball, Barnes gave that sublime ball to Mitchell, Mumm, Slipper, Brown and Anthony Fainga’a all contributed. The only exception was Saia Fainga’a.

But credit should also be given to a gallant South African side that was flawless for about 30 minutes in the second half. What a performance by Victor Matfield (that try created for Fourie), Morne Steyn (9 out of 9).

All in, a great game.

NB: Could we suggest the IRB to do away with the second half? The Wallabies would then have a real chance to be world champions and it will save time.

You forget that many of these players have been around in some of the 10 losses suffered at the hands of the ABs Arrogance is a funny thing and none more a better example than the post you have made here.

Why do the AB's and their fans get accused of arrogance when you get statements like "the AB’s are a complete team, playing at 100% of their potential right now, Wallabies are still way off the finished product (I’d say 60-70% of full potential) and yet still troubling ABs (ok we haven’t won anything against them for a while but I don’t think you’ll find anyone in the NZ camp who rate the Wallabies as a gimme game)."

Totally agree about Saia's brain explosion - absolutely disgraceful. Don't think we'll see much of him next year when Polota-Nau is back... Nau + Moore is all we need. And hopefully Deans will have the sense to get rid of Mumm when Vickermann and Howrill are back and same goes of axing Brown when Higginbotham and Palu are back... At full strength the Wallabies could be a very exciting team - I'd go as far as to say they could be as good or better than the AB's next year (a lot can change in a year - look at Kiwi's 2009 v Kiwi's 2010) they certainly have the potential! The AB's are a complete team, playing at 100% of their potential right now, Wallabies are still way off the finished product (I'd say 60-70% of full potential) and yet still troubling ABs (ok we haven't won anything against them for a while but I don't think you'll find anyone in the NZ camp who rate the Wallabies as a gimme game). Only question is whether Deans can bring the best out of them in time for the big one? I think he can.

Well done to the Wallabies. I still can't believe how this game played out. In my mind there was no way they would win this game after Steyn slotted that last penalty and the Boks had the ball going into the last minute!

Only problem??? Come on, there were a number of them but a win is win. With the youth and inexperience of this team you are always going to have to take the good with the bad until they get some miles on the clock.
