Time for Sage to make a glorious change

By tommy_doleman / Roar Pro

Life as a Perth Glory fan has certainly had its ups and downs, and you certainly don’t need to look at just this season to work that out. For years Perth has been seeking to replicate the Glory days but it seems as one step is taken forward, two are taken backwards (or six in this seasons case).

Off the field the crowds are coming and the chairman has been terrific, but on the field things must change, and quickly.

Throughout a season a club is bound to have its good and bad periods. There comes a time where the foot has to be put down and six defeats in a row is quite unacceptable. The manner of the defeats though is far more concerning though and the fans admittedly deserve a lot better.

The game against Sydney on the weekend was particularly alarming.

A lack of leadership across the field from back to front was evident and a distinct lack of passion was there for all to see. In the midst of a barren run, you would expect the solidarity of your senior players to step up and pull the team out of a rut.

Solidarity is non-existent though – illustrated by the 13 goals conceded in the Perth’s last five outings, leading to the fans rightly questioning whether these players really want to wear the Glory jersey.

Sure confidence is low, but how can a team put in such an abject performance at home against the bottom side in the competition that are yet to win this season?

For me there are two possible solutions to stop the rot.

The first would be to give some of the younger lads an opportunity over senior players who are seriously under performing. Tommy Amphlett, Andrija Jukic, Anthony Skorich and Ryan Pearson are players occasionally seen in the purple shirt, but they just aren’t given a fair crack.

This would hopefully bring some much needed energy into the squad, to revitalise the outlook of a team that are well and truly in a slump.

Some may debate that it’s inappropriate to throw the youngsters in at the deep end. However, these kids are fresh and are looking to make a career for themselves and if they can’t get an opportunity now, when on earth are they going to?

A no-fear attitude, a willingness to be positive and take the game on may just be the catalyst to kick-start a season and reverse a predictability that has developed over the weeks.

The Brisbane Roar in particular has benefited from this, despite questions at the time of senior players Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto being moved on. Closer to home, Scott Neville has been a rare shining light for the Glory and a prime example of a former youth league player relishing his chance in the firsts.

Let’s not forget the boys from the west also made the National Youth League Grand final last season as well.

The second suggestion would be to change the direction of the club, and to invest in a new footballing philosophy that hasn’t really changed over the years.

McMahon, Smith and Mitchell have coached in the past, so what is another Brit Ian Ferguson going to offer that the others didn’t? A foreign (non-british) coach would be a great start, and let’s be honest; Tony Sage could probably afford to bring one in.

This would allow the Glory to develop a different system to the usual formation and tactics used on match day. The long balls over the top that are played are not quick and direct as they are in England, rendering them completely ineffective in their ability to catch out any defenders.

This style of game suits a player with the potential to break the off-side trip like Nikita Rukvytsya, but does it suit the aging legs of Robbie Fowler?

Furthermore, where is Fowlers best position in this team? The long balls at the moment are currently bypassing the former Liverpool legend, which see him disappear for large portions of the game.

His creativity is generally good though, but this can only be utilised with passes to his feet and touches to release the forwards and the wingers. This would also give Todd Howarth and Mile Sterjovski a chance to drive at the defence and get to the byline, rather than play fetch down the touchline or stuck on the static ball.

On the topic of Sterjovski, a change of manager and system might just be what he needs to re-ignite his career. At 31, the former Socceroo needs to find his best form, both personally and for the Glory who realistically need a better contribution from a player of his calibre.

Branko Jelic must play more as well in this side despite his recent lack of goals, mainly due to the intelligent positions he takes in the final third and his threat as an ‘in the box player’. Michael Baird certainly tries hard, but is it likely he’s going to score the goals to win the Glory matches? Probably not.

Another player under the cosh to the fans is Adriano Pellegrino and I simply wonder what his role is within this team. He’s not a natural winger, his crossing is inconsistent and his pace and skill levels rarely challenge opposition full backs. Nor is he a central midfielder or your basic wider supporting midfielder.

Finally Jacob Burns needs to drop a lot deeper and use the Kevin Muscat name that he is developing to screen the back four and do no more. His distribution in the middle of the park isn’t at a level where it’s going to threaten from a set piece situation, or in the role of a playmaker

So that’s my antidote to cure the curse of the Glory, but the question is: What will the Glory do now? Whatever they do, decisions must be made soon to arrest the short-term, but more so to sustain the long-term.

What do you think?

In fairness to British coaches, in the state league in Perth the British coaches & their teams that I have seen have all played passing, 1 - 2, combinations Football, not hit & hope like the PG

Never won an away match against the Central Coast Robbie, so it doesn't bode very well early! (un)lucky 7 is a real possibility. At least its not in gosford though... that's a start

You have some good points Tommy, I do agree. Perth Glory have always been the team with so much potential, especially this season. Witnessing a club that was once so successful to how they are performing at present is dissapointing for the game. The likes of Fowler, Sterjovski, Burns etc need to start stepping up. Hopefully the team show some more heart for the shirt this weekend, CCM is always a tough trip.

I have a lot of respect for Saga he has done wonders for Perth Glory, but it is remarkable how he continues to load money on fairly expensive players yet sticks with such poor coaching staff. I'm not saying Australian coaches are bad but you would imagine they would go and get a good European/South American Coach, international coaches not only are doing wonder for our league they're also bring in these small players that re very good from there home ie Kesial, Worm etc. Perhaps someone from Belgium, Holland, France etc I personally don't think Ferguson is a bad coach he just needs to continue to learn, it would be good if he could learn under a good overseas coach like Arnold has. I think Mitchell was a terrible coach and besides his ability to recruit good players he had no idea what he was doing.

Australian Football - Sage is a fantastic leader at the club, I wouldn't have anybody else as chairman - there's no-one more loyal to a club as you pointed out. I don't know if you've ever seen him before the games in Perth but he walks around the pitch, talks to people in the crowd, listens to the shed singing his name and laps it up. For me that's what football is all about, but even he will be desperate for success now. He did an interview of Fifa Football Mundial on Foxsports last weekend and he said that this season is the third year of his three season plan for the Glory. If wholesale changes don't come soon then I'll be surprised.

I really admire Tony Sage and his loyalty to his team and managers, past and present, his faith has been admirable. I have only heard him speak a view times in interviews on SBS and he seems like a committed and well respected owner. But his love for all British is his down fall and needs to realise that British Football Managers don't work in Australia. I think he needs to fine a German manager to put in place there. There was one there in the past that the fans loved and the Glory achieved some wonderful success. Time to give the Brits the flick and go with a first class European style manager. I'm sure if he spoke to Osieck he would get some good contacts to to suss out. It is really time for a new coaching direction at the Glory.

Hey guys cheers for the feedback.... Smoky - I think that comment is a little harsh on the central coast mariners, given the way we are playing at the moment! Luke - It would be interesting, doubt Foz would come into coaching - he likes his "Chief football analyst" chair at SBS Midfielder - Thanks for the feedback, passion is what the roar is all about! I don't dispute that Ferguson is hard working and a giver of 100% for one minute, I just struggle to see what he's going to bring to the table that's different to Mitchell, Ron Smith and McMahon. While he is a grafter, Perth need to start playing football because at the moment they have no system in place or a gameplan to do so - and I don't believe Fergie can provide that. You're right Stange was superb (reminds me a bit of Blieberg)

Tommy Great article mate and from the heart, I can tell you are hurting, love the passion... Many of the things you suggested I am not sure as I don't have Fox and stream off the net when I watch... So being honest I know little of PG's squad their strenghts & weakness... however I do know a lot about your current coach... being a Marriner fan we watched Ferguie from Hal 1 to Hal 4... He is loyal, hard working, but both his career as a player and his coaching have always been on the hard side... I loved your NSL coach Strang (sorry spelt wrong) he had flar and style and swager ... I miss that a lot and I miss the old PG... I watched a match early in the season when you come from behind and drew and I could hear the Shed singing and it just made me happy... Simply you have a great ground, great supporters a good team, a excellent owner and crap coaches... you need to get a high quality coach and with Mitchell still there I wonder aloud if ythat is possible...

Why do Glory appoint clueless coach one after the other. TONY SAGE, just getting good players are not going to win the league. You need a competent coach. No British coach please

It's odd how the Glory have fizzled each season. Theoretically they have a strong squad. Their style however, has always struck me as a slightly more technical Mariners. Long balls, threatening physically, and quite OK a few years ago. But the quality of the league has improved and Perth haven't adapted. I'd say you need a clear-out like what happened at the Brisbane Roar before you get near the top of the table again. But that won't happen under Mitch and Ferguson.

An opportunity wasted, 6 losses in a row with an experienced team. If would be bearable if they were playing some younger players as at least you would be finding out if they could cut it. If Matthew Leckie was a PG he would never have got a game in the last 2 seasons as the former / current coaching staff do not have the ability to teach a young player how to play the game
