North attempts to save Test career

By Steve Larkin / Wire

Marcus North needs to save two things on Tuesday: an Ashes match and his Test career. The Australian batsman faces a defining day, with failure almost certain to result in being axed.

North will join his fellow lefthander Mike Hussey when Australia resume at 4-238 on the final day against England on Tuesday, with 98 overs to survive.

Hussey’s own career hung in the balance two weeks ago and he will offer North some advice – enjoy the challenge.

“Just to try and relax, just try and watch the ball and just let your instincts take over,” Hussey said of his advice to his West Australian teammate.

North has not reached double figures in nine of his past 18 Test innings – nor in 15 of his 34 Test knocks.

But Hussey backed his 31-year-old mate to produce the goods.

“He’s a class player and I have no doubt he’ll definitely score runs,” Hussey said.

“He’s a champion player, a champion guy to have around the team and we want him to be part of the team, so we’re behind him all the way.

“It’s just about him going out there and enjoying it, trusting his game, and I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

Playing for Aus doesn't appear that attractive at present. Maybe that has something to do with the sudden loss of form of the prospects, cant say I blame them, you'll get hammered in the press if you only get a 50, that is most of the current lots problems sans North of course. They should pick Voges, he already has a CA contract and as he just made a good score for the Warriors, he won't make another for THEM for a while, but he might do for someone else.

North has really proved his critics wrong this match. He showed that he is capable of reaching double figures and not going on to make a ton. But who to replace him? Everyone talks up Khwaja & Ferguson around here but they haven't done much since being named in the 17 man squad. Cam White made a fighting 2nd innings ton against England A in similar circumstances to today in fact but I'm always howled at the mere mention of his name on here (we Victorians are used to that though). So Smith then? With four quicks for Perth? Couldn't be any worse than today's result.
