Player revolt led to Barsby resigning

Queensland Cricket coach Trevor Barsby has stood down after losing support of the Bulls playing group and staff.

Barsby resigned just hours before the Bulls were to play the Warriors in a one day match at the Gabba following a meeting with Queensland Cricket chairman Jim Holding and CEO Graham Dixon on Wednesday morning.

Barsby was told management had canvassed the opinions of several players who’d conceded they no longer had faith in the coach.

“We’re not sacking Barsby,” Holding told reporters.

“Trevor made his own decision this morning to stand down.

“No players directly approached me and said there was a problem.

“When Trevor decided that his relationship with the playing group and support staff was unworkable, I can tell you some of the players we spoke to yesterday said it was becoming unworkable.”

Holding said trouble had been bubbling away for several weeks and it came to a head after he personally sought the opinions of five Bulls players on Tuesday.

He said support staff had been complaining to members of the board as early as mid-November.

“I chose the players the members of the board spoke to – a cross section of players,” Holding said.

“I am not going to comment on the relationship between the players and his support staff.”
Barsby, who has led the Bulls to the last two domestic finals, was reappointed just a few months until April, 2012.

“There was no players who pushed to oust him,” Holding insisted.

Injured skipper James Hopes stood in as coach for the one day match and will also take control for this weekend’s domestic four day clash with the Warriors.

Wicketkeeper Chris Harley, who is sidelined with a sore thumb, was sheepish when approached by journalists.

“We’re waiting to hear what’s going on, just like you are,” he said before walking off.

Barsby, who played more than a 100 first class games for the Bulls and was one of the state’s most popular players, could not be contacted for comment.
