Which team was the best performer in 2010?

By The Roar / Editor

Each of the following six teams claimed major honours in 2010 – from Olympic gold medals to World and Asian Cup victories to domestic titles. But which team was the best performer of 2010? Below are nominees for The Roar’s 2010 Australian sports team of the year, listed in alphabetical order with their 2010 achievements and milestone.

Each team must have won a major trophy/tournament/medal in 2010, with only one representative allowed from each sport.

Please vote at the bottom of the page and the winner will be announced in early January. Voting closes on Wednesday 29 December.

The nominees are:

Australian Matildas (Football)

Became the first Australian national team to win the Asian Cup, defeating North Korea in a dramatic penalty shootout; overcame hosts China and South Korea in the group stage to reach the final, which ensured qualification for the 2011 World Cup; also won the Peace Cup, defeating South Korea in the final.

Australian Kookaburras (Hockey)

First team to win the World Cup, Champion’s Trophy and Commonwealth Games gold in the same year; won 2010 Commonwealth gold with a thumping 8-0 win over hosts India; won the World Cup in March with a 2-1 win over Germany; defeated England 4-0 to win Champions Trophy in August.

Collingwood Magpies (AFL)

Claimed their first AFL premiership in two decades in amazing circumstances, following a drawn grand final against the St Kilda Saints which forced a replay the following weekend; won the replay in commanding fashion with a 56-point margin; won the minor premiership with 17 wins from the 22 rounds.

Queensland Maroons (Rugby League)

Claimed their fifth consecutive State of Origin series win over New South Wales with a 3-0 clean sweep – the first sweep in a decade and the first for Queensland since 1995; arguably one of the greatest rugby league teams assembled with Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater, Darren Lockyer and co.

TeamVodafone – Triple Eight (V8 Supercars)

Switched from Ford to Holden for 2010 and fired out of the blocks with a one-two in the first race of the V8 Supercars season in Abu Dhabi; scored another one-two at the Bathurst 1000 – the team’s fourth win in the last five Bathurst 1000s.

Victorian Bushrangers (Cricket)

Won their 28th Sheffield Shield title with a commanding victory over Queensland in the final; won the 2009/10 KFC Big Bash – their fourth Twenty20 title in five seasons; runners-up in the 2009/10 Ford Ranger One Day Cup competition.

What about the Wallaroos, they climbed from 7th to 3rd in the world ratings, plus they are the 7's world champs.

The Mighty Kookas. It's quite mind-boggling to watch them go. The fastest and most organized team in men's international hockey by quite some way.

I don't know why collingwood is in there and not the st.george-lllawarra. Why is winning an afl premiership more valuable than a team winning an NRL premiership? The authors probably from Melbourne. Anyway for what its worth the kookaburras and the matildas are easily the best sporting teams of this year.

Matildas for Team Of The Year. Brilliant performance, thrilling finale on a swamp of a pitch (they'd have cancelled the game if it was on the Gold Coast) and this from a team which until recently had to pay their own way on the international stage.

You can't nominate serial cheats as a Team Of The Year, only as Disgrace Of The Year.

Matildas for me too. The others are all worthy especially the Kookaburras. However I watched the Matildas' games and they epitomise the importance of team spirit. Their technical quality was on average less than the Japanese and North Koreans [although we do have a few very skilful players] but as a team they just put in an amazingly determined effort that overcame their weaknesses. Absolutely inspiring to watch. The other reason for voting for them is that they are pioneers: they have succeeded in winning an Asian championship in Asia.

Sorry Mark and WIlly.... the Bronos will be riding high in 2011.... and that will mean a double premiership 2011-2012... :)

I voted for the Matildas because Womens' sport needs more recognition... and from a male perspective, when it comes to Sport what is better than a bunch of good looking sheilas running around getting all hot and sweaty? I would have loved to have voted for the QLD State of Origin Team, just because of their 5-0 sweep, but I'll vote next year when we take it to 6-0. But if I can mention a team that hasn't been included for voting... The Queensland Roar!!!

No problem at all with "strong dissapproval" Mals, it was certinally warranted ! Iam talking more about abuse of women and children who happened to wearing purple.

I doubt an air pistol slug would pierce the skin at 10m. Unlike the Rail Gun slug in Quake Arena and Open Arena. You're talking serious damage there.

Which is also why we love Doug Walters so much. Agreed that the third Criteria should be - Most be competitive with at least two parties trying to win Does the 10m air pistol fit under criteria 2 that if you stuff up you could die??

Should we rule out the 10m air pistol? Criteria 1 also rules out Darts - but let's be honest, anyone who can play a professional game with a beer in one hand and a fag hanging out of their mouth dererves our utmost respect.

So Stormybill you can't think of a reason why Parramatta & Manly fans in particular voiced their strong disapproval of the Storm team when they played away at Parramatta Stadium & Brookvale Oval...? Well said TammyS!!!

Yeah but obviously they need to be competitive, ie a competition between two or more people. Obviously that rules out yoga etc. Motorsport is a sport.

Their team was way over the cap all year though. Their wins this year mean nothing

Hi Mad I put the 2nd critieria in to remove physical pursuits such as Yoga or Tai Chi which involve a huge amount of commitment, fitness and ability, but are not sports. But unfortunately, that cuts out Tennis and Golf. What do you think?

Which raises another question; why the fascination with quietness in tennis? Top level motor racing requires both skill and fitness. Certainly more than darts or curling...

No offence but they are two poor categories to judge a sport. Point two rules out tennis, golf. If it requires skill and some level of fitness through activity then it's a sport.

I would say that Bellamy's effort in keeping his players up for it all season playing for no points, only pride, is the most remarkable coaching effort I have seen in many years. If only he could have harnessed some of that power for the State of Origin!
