Sydney FC keep A-League finals hopes alive

By News / Wire

An injury-time strike from new Finnish striker Juho Makela salvaged a point for Sydney FC against Melbourne Victory in Saturday’s A-League clash at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The 1-1 draw kept alive Sydney’s slim finals hopes, with Makela sidefooting home in the 93rd minute after Danny Allsop had given fifth-placed Melbourne the lead six minutes into the second half.

Vitezslav Lavicka’s side are six points adrift of the top-six and now must win their remaining five games if they are to have any genuine hope of defending their title.

A rejuvenated Sydney, who went into the game on the back of two consecutive wins, came out looking to create chances and take advantage of a Victory side missing strikers Robbie Kruse and Archie Thompson as well as suspended skipper Kevin Muscat.

Sung-Hwan Byun kicked off an explosive 10 minutes for Sydney that saw a flurry of chances, his powerful 29th minute shot forcing a diving save from Victory gloveman Michael Petkovic.

Petkovic was again called into action when he saved Bruno Cazarine’s header.

Young gun Petratos, 18, who has just signed a new two-year deal with the Sky Blues, had another impressive display causing all sorts of trouble for the Victory backline.

Japanese import Hirofumi Moriyasu almost put Sydney in front only for his well-struck effort to strike the base of the post just before the break.

The visitors looked a different side after the interval, and their pressure paid off when Allsopp, who has returned to the club following a spell overseas, latched onto a neat pass from Carlos Hernandez and rolled the ball past Liam Reddy.

The Melbourne supporters celebrated their lead by lighting flares in the stands, and their side continued to press with Marvin Anglo and Hernandez both going close.

Sydney replied with long range efforts from Shannon Cole and marquee man Nicky Carle, and Petratos squandered a great one-on-one opportunity 10 minutes from time.

However, with Sydney’s season looking dead and buried, Makela, who was the Finnish league’s top scorer last season with HJK Helsinki, scored in front of The Cove for the second successive week after being set up by Carle.

Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka, who’s future at the club is still in doubt, was happy to have secured a point but lamented the many squandered opportunities his men had in the first stanza.

“We played a great first half, with lots of effort and good qaulity, we created chances,” Lavicka said.

“But we just didn’t score the goals.

“We started the second half a bit shaky and Victory pinished us.

“My feelings are mixed tonight.”

Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick agreed the hosts dominated the opening half and parised Costa Rican import Hernandez, who played despite being injured, for his crucial goal-producing pass.

“It’s a cliche but there’s no doubt it was a game of two halves tonight,” Merrick said.

“That pass that Carlos played, he’s got tremendous vision and he’s a great passer of the ball.

“It was touch-and-go actually whether he was going to play.

“But he played with a calf injury and (Grant) Brebner played with vision in only one eye for most of the second half.

“So given all that and I thought it was a tremendous performace.”

A tweet from Kevin Airs (442 online editor) says that Lavicka will survive at least until completion of ACL - seems a sensible approach.

As much as I hate to admit it, Sydney were fantastic, and extremely dominating. Without Kruse, Thompson, Suhka, Leijer and Muscat, Victory did fight well. -- Comment left via The Roar's iPhone app. Download The Roar's iPhone App in the App Store here.

SFC has no chance of making the semis, but on the performance yesterday show they now in position to not make a complete A$$ of themselves in the ACL. There were some promising signs after a poor season.

Mathematically possible for Sydney if every team above us falls over....... it's not going to happen. Nonetheless there was much to be happy with last night, and signs that we may be competitive in the Champions League. Carle has started to justify his marquee status in the last 2 games. Makela seems to have the positioning and finishing skills of the scorer we don't have when Brosque is out. The centre of defence is looking more convincing with Jurman and Keller [although for the goal Jurman let Hernandez turn him and Keller combined with Byun to somehow let the ball get to Allsop]. One of the unexpected bonuses of the injuries and turmoil of this season is Petratos getting an extended run; I'd have him on the team sheet even when everyone is fit. Musialik has found at least a semblance of the form that made him a vital player last year. There are problems still. The standard of the A League has improved to the point where McFlynn's virtues of commitment and energy are outweighed by his technical deficiencies. The standard of crossing is generally shocking. They're underhit when Cazarine is long, overhit when he's come short. Does no-one look before they cross or are they just incompetent? Also most of them are hit 20-30 metres from the goal line and consequently on the easiest of angles for the defence [the exception was Jamieson's lateral and flat cross to Makela late against Gold Coast]. If I had $10 for every floating ball eaten up by Gold Coast and Victory's central defenders and keepers I'd be writing this on a new Macbook. I hope there is no question of Lavicka being fired. It's been a very difficult season due to the team being gutted first by loss of personnel and then by injuries - and bad luck in some games. However the way the team is coming together now means they should stick with him. Roll on the ACL!!

Don't believe SFC have any chance of making the finals. They are 6 pts behind the 6th placed Jets, who have two extra games to play! If that weren't bad enough, there's still the Heart and Phoenix in between in better position. It's impossible that all of these teams will go without points along the way. Congratulations to Danny Allsopp for his first goal back, even if unconvinciing.
