The Queensland Firebirds have continued their perfect trans-Tasman netball competition start with a thumping 62-38 victory over the struggling West Coast Fever at Challenge Stadium on Monday night.

The 24-goal win followed impressive wins over the NSW Swifts and Adelaide Thunderbirds.

The Firebirds are emerging as genuine championship threats while West Coast will need to quickly turn things around or be out of the finals race early.

The Fever went down to the Adelaide Thunderbirds on Thursday night just two days after flying out of Christchurch and narrowly missing the devastating earthquake.

Fever’s Susan Fuhrmann and the Firebirds’ Romelda Aiken renewed their Australia-Jamaica rivalry and Fuhrmann did well keeping Aiken to just 20 goals but Nat Medhurst had a massive game, finishing with 39 from 45 attempts.

At the other end, Caitlin Bassett was a tower of strength for the Fever scoring 30 of her team’s 38 goals, but had little support again.

While Fuhrmann was doing a good job up against Aiken in the opening quarter, Medhurst was on fire for Queensland and her 13 goals helped the Firebirds to a 16-8 advantage.

The Fever kept Medhurst a little quieter in the second period with Josie Janz coming on to defend in place of Ama Agbeze. As a result, West Coast trailed by nine goals at half-time, just one more than the quarter-time deficit.

The Firebirds had another gear, though, and started the third quarter with six of the first seven goals to suddenly lead by 12.

That advantage stretched to as much as 17 before the period ended with Queensland up 47-31.

They led by a game-high 24 in the last quarter and won by that margin.

The Firebirds return to Brisbane to take on the Southern Steel on Sunday while the Fever head to Sydney to face the Swifts on Monday.
