Channel 9 need to show their games live

By therookie / Roar Pro

It’s always annoying when your favourite team is playing and you have to wait one or two hours to see the replay of it. Now, this was sorted by Fox Sports as they came up with a smart idea called Viewers Choice, where you can have an option of watching two games on Saturday night live.

Meanwhile, for Channel 9, you have to wait till 9:30pm on a Friday night to watch your team play. As for Queensland, they can access it, but it’s vise-versa.

I can understand the Sunday footage being delayed an hour, as it slots in at the end of the earlier Sunday match played on Fox Sports, though the NRL match officials should reschedule those matches on a Sunday.

For Friday, they should have a Viewers Choice on Channel 9 which allows fans from across the State the ability to access both matches played on the night.

I would never move outside of NSW/QLD purely based on how bad the NRL coverage is!

Never stand between Channel Nine and the sponsor's dollar. You would be trampled to death.

I think what happens now in Sydney and Brisbane is ok BUT the dreadfull telecasting outside of QLD and NSW is deplorable. The mistake was made by the NRL and will be rectified with the new laws governing sport telecasting. But it will mean wating until the knew laws are passed and a new tv contract. I like Lopatis blog.

SKY TV offers the best coverage of the NRL anywhere and puts Australian coverage to shame. All games are live and uninterrupted. Even carrying the Channel Nine feed, when Rab's or Sterlo cross to the ads, the commentary disappears with the live pictures still beaming through. Compare that with what we have here where Channel Nine cut immediately to the news in Victoria with no medal presentation or the final series disappearing off our screens completely during the day and in the case of a delayed sunday game in NSW, we know there's a golden point (or not) because of timing cut to the news. Time to scrap the anti siphoning legislation that allows Nine to broker sport in the way it does. Remember we were supposed to have "every ball of the ashes in full HD". All we got was SD and the last half hours play in SA and WA lost while they went to the news.

Try living outside of NSW or QLD. This friday we have to look forward to on Channel Nine; The Lake House: A lonely doctor who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its former resident, a frustrated architect. They must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it's too late. followed by; Chances Are: Louie Jeffries is happily married to Corinne. On their first anniversary, Louie is killed crossing the road. Louie is reincarnated as Alex Finch, and twenty years later, fate brings Alex and Louie's daughter, Miranda, together. It's not until Alex is invited to Louie's home that he begins to remember his former life, wife and best friend. Of course, there's also the problem that he's attracted to Louie's/his own daughter The rugby league starts at 12.30 (saturday morning - five hours delay) or 11.30 if one is lucky to have FOXTEL. So much for Nines commitment to the NRL

Won't happen. They generate good viewer numbers under the current system, and would be bleeding its same audience to its second channel; ie, NRL on 9, Chick flick on Go! and either South Park or a show about submarines or Nazis on GEM. Hits 3 different demographics. You will never get a TV network willingly showing NRL on two channels simultaneously. They would be competing with themselves. Also, even though there is a drop off in the second game, the current Friday Night structure is a big ratings winning set up. Only problem is Brisbane has only one side, so Fridays inevitably feature the Broncos (or maybe Gold Coast) to maximise OzTam ratings. To maximise the next TV deal we need a second Brisbane side, as more local content is good, and it also helps sell pay TV subscriptions in Queensland. Sunday Footy is delayed so that Channel 9 use NRL as a lead in show to get people to watch its news - the Sunday news is probably the most important show each week for networks for ratings - they fight tooth and nail over this slot. Channel 9 uses the popularity of NRL to run just before the news so that Rugby League fans are in front of the TV watching 9 when the news starts. The current structure is quite good, the NRL is not paid enough for it though. The big questiong is what to do with the extra game if the NRL expands in 2013: Pay TV? break up Super Saturday on Foxtel and have one game on Free to air? have a double header on Sunday? have a Sunday evening (post news, say around 7:30pm) slot?

Another solution would be to scrap the current rights, including rules and instead sell prime rights and secondary rights as separate options. Prime rights would be for exclusive live broadcast. Not exclusive first-run. Secondary rights would be non exclusive (more then one broadcaster can win), broadcast may only start no sooner than 2 hours after scheduled kick-off. Pricing would be set by the highest bid - all other loosing bidders may also choose take up the same offer at that same winning bid price. (Must make a bid to be in, and a minimum bid price is enforced). All prime and secondary rights winners have the right to replay games. Bidders may partner, i.e. 7+10, Fox+Sky, if they want to Channel 9+ESPN, SBS+TVNZ+Al Jazeera+Cartoon Network, and partners may share (i.e. split) or/and mirror (simulcast) their coverage. -- While that may appear risky remember the largest audience is Australia. (Distantly followed by NZ, then UK.) Separate auctions for the major mediums (tv and internet). The winner of the prime rights is effectively cornered into showing their coverage live, no more sitting on exclusive first-run coverage till stupid hours which really only hurts the viewers. (e.g. showing 7:30PM games live in NSW and QLD but only at midnight in VIC as secondary bidders can now show the same game from 9:30PM anywhere including VIC - that's the reason for removing the "exclusive first run" clause.) The bigest market is Aus, way distant next is NZ, then even more distant UK. But we need something special for our ANZAC buddies. Currenltly only Sky has any NZ rights, already soewhat partnered with Fox. This new idea provides NZ FTA channels, which currently have no cover at all, a chance to get in by partnering with an Aussie channel. If no NZ channels win (in a partnership), then they can look at separate NZ only prime + secondary auctions for NZ, but I can't see that happeing, I'm sure Fox would love to have Sky chip in it's dollars to boost it's bid, likely 7,9 and 10 would also look to NZ players to help boot their pots too. Other International deals would be similar with the provision that they must provide availibility of coverage to at least 75% of the population in 100% of the geographical area bidded for. (This avoides situations like this year where Setanta, an Irish company, has won total exclusive rights for South East Asia even though only a few of about 20 or so countries (less than 10% of the population in that exclusive area) can even get their channel. Similar stories apply elsewhere, the NRL has really dropped the ball (once again a poor job) of developing and promoting their game to a wider audience.)

My pet hate towards Nine is how they treat the viewers and think we are stupid... My best example would be things like last years Four Nations. A supposed 'live' game played in Sydney was broadcasted on an hour delay into Qld because of daylight savings. C'mon.... do they really think we wouldnt know???

Word has it this is going to happen now that Ch 9 has multiple channels. The "Qld" game will be on the main channel in Qld and the other game will be on one of the subsidiary channels, and vice versa in NSW. However, I wouldn't be holding my breath, as Ch 9 have a terrible record with sport telecasts. We aren't even seeing the start of the cricket tonight because of Funniest Home Videos FFS. As if we haven't seen enough kids hurting themselves. The stupidest situation though is with the Sunday game. The only people on the planet who can't watch it live are the ones who care most about it, regardless of how much money you spend on pay tv or internet connections

as long as channel 9 contract allows them to delay transmissions they will keep doing it as they get to stick an extra half hour of adds in.its a good argument for the abc to get coverage of maybe the Sunday game but I think the big bucks wont allow it,.
