AFL 2011: only one week to go

By - Cardoo / Roar Rookie

One week; seven days; one hundred and seventy hours. Just 11,000 minutes (ball park) before the AFL season in 2011 commences. It’s so close I can almost taste it!

I’ve lost count of how many times, over the past month, I’ve looked at the opening round, worked out the scores and picked the winning teams.

Who’s in, who’s out? Will this team improve this year or go down? Will that team be able to play as well as last year without Joe Blow?

Look at the preseason. Wow! That team did well but that other team didn’t do as well as expected. Hang on! We can’t take any notice of the NAB Cup can we?

How long to go now?

One week, seven days, one hundred and seventy hours (approx.) 11,000 minutes (ball park) before the AFL season commences. Damn! That’s a long time!

Just watching On the Couch for the second time tonight. Unbelievable that Collingwood's turnover is now double that of North - raises all sorts of questions. They used the example of Essendon, and the massive investment they have made in their football dept this season. This is the area where the haves will have it all over the have nots in the future (if they haven't already). Will it prompt some sort of response from the AFL in the future?

Roosy had a good debut On the Couch. But like other coaches and ex-coaches, he has not got it 100% right. I just listened to Lyon on SEN, and he is on the right track. People like Roosy are worried that you can get an injury and have a healthy bloke on the bench. But that will only happen if you have made a tactical move, not to cover an injury - that's your choice. However, where you do use the sub as intended, to cover an injury, it means that both teams remain with 3 on the interchange for the whole game (obviously that changes with a 2nd injury, but that was always the case). So where one team gets an early injury, it is not disadvantaged over the course of the game. If you use the sub at three quarter time, for tactical reason, so be it - don't complain if you get that injury, it's bad luck.

SEN are talking footy, footy, footy - doesn't get any better. Reminds of the old World of Sports, where during the footy season 160 out of 180 minutes were dedicated to the footy - and it was never enough.

2011 also signals an IC year (held every 3 years). This will be the 4th IC held, the biggest ever, including a women's section for the first time, and it is also the very first time the AFL will have supported the IC in any meaningful way, following on from the establishment of the Oceania U16 cup (two held), the establishment of AFL Europe last year with a full time position, and the incorporation of Oceania U16 and World U16 teams in the national U16 championships last year. Plenty already happening in relation to this year's IC. The US have announced their team, to be captained by the experienced Dan Sarbucker, who spent all of last season playing in a country league: http://www.worldfootynews.com/article.php/20110315210437512 Here's the IC11 logo: http://www.worldfootynews.com/article.php/20110317233731241 The women's section of IC11 recently annouced: http://www.worldfootynews.com/article.php/20110317123857249
