Brian Smith: Saviour or party organiser?

By LeftArmSpinner / Roar Guru

In December 2009, on the occasion of Carney’s and Smith’s signings, I said and I say it again: Brian Smith: saviour or party organiser?

The consensus was to give Brian Smith time. By October 2010, he appeared to have been a miracle worker. We now know that not to be the case.

For a short term gain, the club is left reeling yet again!

How would you feel as one of the majority of genuine, hard working professional players at the Roosters who had thrown their support behind Carney as a player, together with their financial exposure, only for it to be dashed on the rocks of Wedding Cake Island off Coogee Beach?

In particular, Anasta and Pearce have been incredibly supportive and understanding. If it is a family member with an addiction to alcohol, then, you support them because you inherited it. There, but for the grace of God, go I!

In this case, the players were unwitting victims of Smith and Politis’s short-term, selfish decision.

Carney is also paying a very high price. He is on the verge of prison! And it is not over yet. The police have challenged the leniency of his most recent brush with the law…

On Tuesday, on The Roar, Scott Woodward bemoaned that his son had chosen Todd Carney as a role model.

Carney is a flawed character compromised by a selfish club and run by a risk taking coach.

Mistakes:

1. Roosters sign a player with a long list of misdemeanors;
2. They base their whole team around this player;
3. They get the other players to embrace and work with this player;
4. They add Carney to a squad already containing other similarly flawed players (Friend, Watts, Myles, the second rower?);
5. They fail to fully address the club’s drinking/Eastern suburb’s culture (a hang over from 2009 and before);
6. They ignore the warning signs that have been evident with Carney for months (there were rumours of binges last season);
7. They don’t manage the mental side of his injury, he is at a loose end, then they play him still injured;
8. They forget, in all of this, that RL is a team sport. Just ask Mr Bennett and his team of no stars. His “Todd Carney”, Jamie Soward, a Roosters cast off, is in line to play at 6 for NSW this year and has a premiership and World Club Challenge to is credit.

NRL is like life, success doesn’t come cheaply or easily. There are no shortcuts.

The best coaches are those that work hardest and who really care for their players. Bennett, Sheens and Gibson were in that mold.

There has been a termed penned for Brian Smith's lack of premiership - it is called the DFI factor. Every team Smith has coached has been infected with DFI. Only a very good coach can rid a team of DFI like Bennett did with the Saints last year. LAS - I would add Hasler to that coaching list.

i would love to at the Pearce dinner table recently. Junior, famous for being a teetotaler, being regaled by the son about how Carney was a changed man, only for dad to say, told you so.................. A little light relief. It should also be remembered that the club had sent a minder with them, Watts and Carney. A minder!!!! A Minder!!!!!!! Is it a kindergarten? And the children slipped him anyway!!!!!!!

Oikee, Myles seems to have slimmed down and got serious in the past season and this. He has also kep this nose clean, so to speak.

You also have to remember, Smithy has never won a grand final. What that means, i am not sure, maybe the rugby league gods just dont like him. :) I said the other day, when a guy like Nat Myles is looking to get out, you know your in trouble. If they lose Myles, i cant see them winning a comp, his clean up work is incredable.

I watched at the SFS in pre season last year as Pearce and others bonded with Carney. this showed on the field etc. etc but they are not family. they are pro footballers who suffer financially when one of their own doesnt stick to the plan or goes off the rails. Aidan, the common theme is politis. how hard can it be to work out that team comes first. just stick your head over the fence to the Swans, their neighbours and see the no dickheads policy in action. look at what Bennett does to repeat offenders......... Its not that hard to work out unless you are a gambler and so desperate to win that you will take short cuts..........

there is more to the ES than getting pissed. the es are thought to be a bit glam and parts are but the majority are just regular people.......... unlike the people mentioned above.

The roosters need to act fast because this incident along with others is derailing their season. It Is pretty clear that the senior players in the club have had enough of Todd Carney. Word is, more than one player has told Carney to pull his head in. Carney in this instance hasn't done much but in conjunction with his other issues everyone is tired and it's time the roosters ripped up his contract. Agree that if he was a fringe player people would be saying Todd who? Sends a bad message to the playing Roster when it's not a level playing field. Everyone thought Fitler was the problem...no it's the culture at the club and Politis more than Smith is the problem.

How does one address the eastern suburbs culture of the club when it is supposed to reflect the eastern suburbs?

Long history of problems. I'm surprised you didnt mention this http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/827925/drunk-fittler-hits-townsville-strife or Myles,Friend incidents etc etc. Like fevola, you just keep on giving these guys chances and they stuff up. If he was a 2nd grader he would be gone which sends a bad message to other players that being talented means you can gain more demerit points. How about leasing him to England or sending him bush again at lower pay or a very substantail fine at least - money talks to some blokes.....

Hospital. thanks. part 1 in December last year was not received very well at all. for the record, I am a long serving Roosters fan. since the bad old days of 1966!!!!! I'm am not putting the blame for the actions on Smith. But Smith and Politis were involved in signing Carney. It was not in teh best long term interests of the club nor the player. as regards the judge of character, the character was there for all to see. Todd Carney is in a battle with the bottle. He needs specialist support. To think that the pressure cooker of an NRL team is considered a suitable environment for an alcoholic who had yet to admit it, is laughable. Remember he didn't drink last season, not because he couldn't, but to be part of the team solidarity. Now, only now, is he going to AA. I feel very sorry for the kid. He has a real battle on his hands. Every day of his life. former bad boys, like Tim Smith at cronulla, need to be given enormous credit for turning it around over the long term. I have probably Jonah'ed him now.

Nice article LeftArmSpinner. I'm not sure if we can really put the blame on Smith. In the end, he didn't do what his players did. Poor character judge, perhaps.
