Forget football World Cup, let's bid for RWC

By Mysonsaremaggots / Roar Rookie

Now that you’ve missed the rights for the 2026 football World Cup, Australians should be bidding for the Rugby World Cup in 2027 or 2031. With the next three RWC already picked (New Zealand, England and Japan) and the 2023 RWC most likely going to South Africa or Italy, 2027 would be a great time for Australia to host another RWC.

It would also be a way to show FIFA how great the 2026 World Cup could have been.

With the way rugby is being played at the moment, having a RWC this year shown in prime-time on FTA and a British and Irish Lions Tour in 2012, it’s the perfect time to start drumming up support for the bid.

With the RWC being on a much smaller scale, and stadiums like Suncrop, Skilled park, Dairy Farmers Stadium in Queensland, SFS, ANZ Stadium, Energy Australia Stadium in NSW, Canberra Stadium in Canberra, AAMI Park, MCG, Etihad in Victoria, Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide and Members Equity Bank Stadium in Perth, there’s no need to build new ones, which would keep the cost down.

The IRB do not require other sporting competitions, such as NRL or AFL, to stop during the event, and with the IRB looking at moving the RWC to October anyway, it would minimize the disruption to their seasons and should keep them both happy.

Also with the success of both the Sydney Olympics, 2003 RWC and the Wallabies standing in world rugby, your chances are a lot higher than what FFA’s will ever be.

2023 Rugby World Cup is going to be hosted Argentina as they are the only Semi-Finalists side not to host one.

NZ didn't decline the 2003 WC; they had it taken away.

" NZ three times" If they'd co-hosted the 03 WC, they'd have never been awarded 2011, so not really. Also, Twickenham has only hosted matches in 2 World Cups.

If SA don't get the 2023 RWC then I would hope we move out of the IRB. Simple as that. Twickenham gets live RWC games every 8 years, Oz has been given the games twice, NZ three times (including the 2003 when they declined to participate for reasons that my old-fashioned mind really appreciates).

Yeah it would have been really good but don't the ARU have that contract with ANZ and were forced to organise another test there so they fulfilled their contractual obligations. Would be good to see them playing some Tests there next season.

For both the 2011 and 2015 events there were 5 bidders in NZ, SA, Eng, Italy and Japan.

i'd rather we just ditched the afl grounds and played all rugby at aami park. the upcoming wallabies test match against samoa would have sold out AAMI Park and the atmosphere would be spectacular. instead we are going to play it at the soul sucking anz stadium which is going to end up being around 1/4 full

How many Nations actually bid for a R..F.U. World Cup at any given time. The scale and magnitude of a Rugby World Cup doesn't have to be compared too others.

Games have always been well received in Melbourne/Victoria prior to the Rebels. We set an attendance record in 1997 when we hosted a Bledisloe at the MCG, set a venue record (at the time) for Docklands during the 2001 British & Irish Lions tour and packed out Docklands for the Sevens during the 2006 Commonwealth Games (currently an attendance record). We have 3 great stadiums (2x oval configurations though) capable of holding matches of different capacities, yet we still get shafted by the ARU. I think they're worried of the fact that we're more appreciative of Rugby then mediocre NSW/Sydney crowds.

IRB has already floated the idea of the 2023 or 2027 RWC going to the US. Then there's Russia

I think the IRB are adopting the FIFA 'style' of awarding bids eg. new frontier, then reliable gold mine. So you have England in 2015, Japan in 2019 so logically you'd think they'll award it to a 'safe' nation, such as Australia, South Africa etc... Big question is the subsequent World Cup in 2027, perhaps Argentina? This would only leave North America the only continent not to host a World Cup. With the inclusion of Sevens at the Olympics we could realistically see this by 2035 or even 2031 (give the mass market in the US/Canada).

Sounds like a terrific idea, and the best bit is that we know the ARU can organise it without huge expense to the taxpayer and without relying on others to do all the heavy lifting. I hope it happens. You can imagine in years to come, with Rebels having a strong following, games in Melbourne would be very well received.

I think you mean the FIFA World Cup bid for 2022, not 2026. As for the IRB version, yes, we should get it after the current round NZ, ENG, JAP then I'd love to see ITAL get it before us...
