Live scores, blog: Tomic vs Djokovic

By The Roar / Editor

Bernard Tomic has impressed in his charge into the Wimbledon quarter finals but tonight he takes on the might of the Serbian world number two Novak Djokovic. Join us for all the live Wimbledon action from 10pm AEST.

Tomic is the youngest player since Boris Becker in 1986 and the first qualifier since Vladimir Voltchkov in 2000 to reach the quarter-finals stage of Wimbledon.

FINAL SCORE: Djokovic won: 6-2 3-6 6-3 7-5

Full Match Report

Although few are giving him a chance, the young Aussie should not be written off.

Tomic comes into the match having beaten world number five Robin Soderling, as well as top 50 players Nikolai Davydenko and Xavier Malisse.

Tomic’s hot form has seen him serving with an accuracy of over 70%, winning over 70% of points on his first serve in his most recent match against Malisse.

This may count for little however as he comes up against the player with arguably the best return of serve in the game.

Tomic and Djokovic are familiar with each other’s games. They are regular practice hitting partners and have previously played a friendly exhibition match at Kooyong, in which Tomic won.

However, Tomic said earlier this week the pair played a practice set before Wimbledon, in which Djokovic “smashed him”.

“I did hit with him before the tournament, we played a set. He destroyed me,” said Tomic.

“Things are not looking good for me, but hopefully he destroyed me then and not on Wednesday.”

Tomic appears to have all the talent required to be a champion, but he can rely heavily on his first serve and has a tendency to capitulate at times, as we saw earlier in the year against opponents including Florian Mayer, Alex Dolgopolov and Rafael Nadal.

Conversely, Djokovic comes off a winning streak earlier this year which saw him unbeaten in 41 straight matches and is also in peak form and fitness, having lost only one set on his way to the quarter final.

It would be a big surprise for Tomic to overcome the world number two in their first ever official meeting, but Tomic will certainly make a match of it. If he can grab an early set to overcome any nerves, he may take this to the wire.
