Tigers win ends horror day for the Panthers

The Tigers ran out deserved winners against an understrength Panthers side 32-16 at Cantrebet Stadium last night. After the Panthers lost Michael Jennings earlier in the day for disciplinary reasons, a weakened Panthers backline was too much for the Tigers, who make it five on the trot.

The game started poorly for the Panthers, as they were dominated early and went down 16-0. The score would have been much worse had Matt Utai not dropped the ball over the line.

Penrith had a late surge however, and managed to peg the Tigers back before the break to 16-6.

After the break the Panthers looked more lively, and were rewarded early on through a try to Adrian Purtell off a Luke Walsh bomb.

The Tigers then scored in controversial circumstances, after Blake Ayshford looked to have dropped the ball. The set of six lead to a Robbie Farrah try to add to an impressive all round performance.

With Penrith on the attack, and having created an attacking overlap, Beau Ryan took an intercept and ran 80 metres to all but end the Panthers hopes of an upset.

The Tigers were rampant afterwards, but a late Ryan Walker try made the score 32-16.

The Tigers will have some serious hopes of a top four berth with this win, while the Panthers will be thinking about next year.

Michael Jennings was forced to hand out 2000 tickets to fans at the match, which he had to pay for himself, after turning up to training under the influence of alcohol.
