What AFL players could take on rugby league?

By Adam-15 / Roar Pro

I wrote on Sunday about rugby league players that could convert to rugby union. AFL is a different case. This team is based on the size, temperament and attitude of the players and not necessarily their skills.

There’s a lot of talk about NRL players going to AFL but what about vice versa? There are the tough players, the skilful players, rough players, fast players, workhorses, it’s the same in both sports. If the best of the best of the AFL at the moment had played rugby league this is what the team would be.

Front Row
Barry Hall and Aaron Sandilands.

The fact is, Hall probably should’ve signed up for league in the first place. His size, strength and ability to muscle off any defender would make him an excellent asset to a league team. He would be the sort of player that would take the first hit-up of each set and be frothing at the mouth to have another.

He would also be an excellent defender but I’d say his shoulder would do more tackling than his arms.

Aaron Sandilands is picked because of size alone. 211cm and 122kg… unbelievable. With his pace and fitness as an AFL player he would be absolutely unstoppable in attack and unpassable in defence.

It might even possible to put him on the wing for the fifth tackle because no one could leap above him.

Hooker
Luke Ball. He has the right speed and size, also renowned for his tackling. He would show leadership qualities after his experience of captaining St Kilda. I imagine he’d have a good quick pass from dummy-half and take some good quick runs through the middle. Wouldn’t recommend him to an NRL club though just in case he decides your rival team is better.

Second Row
Jonathan Brown and Dean Cox
Brown is probably the toughest player in the whole of the AFL, if not Australian sport altogether. His hard running at 195cm and 104kg would make him an excellent second rower. He would be able to take anything that is thrown at him and would be an excellent team player and leader.

One of the top ruckmen and biggest players in the AFL at 201cm and 106kg, not many can muscle out Cox in a one-on-one challeng. He would be dominant on contact with the defence. Seeing Cox and Brown would make the opposition run sideways.

Lock
Luke Hodge. In 2010 he was named All-Australian captain and would bring undeniable leadership to NRL. He is renowned for his extremely high work rate and ability to pump out a high level performance every week, leading the Hawks in nearly all stats.

Five-eighth and halfback
Probably the easiest decisions to make in this team. Chris Judd and Gary Ablett. Judd would play the five-eighth position, controlling the backline and showing leadership. He and Gary would be a great combination and it would be hard for any defence to keep them controlled.

Ablett would play halfback and I imagine he wouldn’t be unlike Allan Langer. The perfect example for workrate in the AFL and his mind and body never stop running. Would be able to conjure up plays at the click of a finger.

Centres
Lance Franklin and Dale Thomas
Lance Franklin wouldn’t be unlike Israel Folau. At 196cm and 101kg he would be a lethal centre. You can’t score 100 goals in a season without being very fast and strong. Would break the line on many occasions and Judd and Ablett would be kicking to his wing at nearly every opportunity.

Dale Thomas at 185cm and 86kg wouldn’t be as big Lance but would be a strong asset in the centres. A very fast player and a tireless tackler and also known for his intensity towards the end of the match.

Wings
Brett Deledio and Jack Riewoldt
Brett Deledio is one of the fastest and toughest players of the AFL and would be an excellent asset on the wing. At 188cm and 88kg, would have the strength to bust through tackles and once through the gap would be very hard to stop.

Jack Riewoldt is one of the toughest full-forwards in the game with a combination of fierce contesting and strong marking. Would be very hard to stop in one on one confrontations and would be put on the other side to Lance Franklin to ensure that both sides would have players that wouldn’t lose a high kick to their corner.

Fullback
Cyril Rioli. He wouldn’t be much different at all to Matty Bowen and Ben Barba. Extremely fast and skilful, would be a fantastic attacking fullback. Running back from a kick he would be very hard to catch let alone stop. Known for his brilliance around goal, I’m sure he could conjure up some brilliance on a rugby field as well.

1. Cyril Rioli (Hawthorn)
2. Jack Riewoldt (Richmond)
3. Dale Thomas (Collingwood)
4. Lance Franklin (Hawthorn)
5. Brett Deledio (Richmond)
6. Chris Judd (Carlton)
7. Gary Ablett (Gold Coast)
8. Barry Hall (Bulldogs)
9. Luke Ball (Collingwood)
10. Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle)
11. Jonathan Brown (Brisbane)
12. Dean Cox (West Coast)
13. Luke Hodge (Hawthorn)

Bench
14. Jimmy Bartel (Geelong)
15. Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)
16. Nic Naitanui (West Coast)
17. Matthew Pavlich (Fremantle)

No AFL player would possibly make it in the NRL simply because they dont learn how to tackle front on. In league you need to know how to work with other defenders to stop those big forwards thundering at you. If an opposing team sees one weak link in defence guess were they will be "directing traffic".

"No one ever talks about the tactics etc in league." Second man plays? Line speed? Up-and-in defence? Fullback used as a second-receiver/five-eighth? Tackling techniques to slow down the play-the-ball? Ball-runners changing their line upon reception? Halves positioning their backlines flat instead of deep (IE. Kimmorley used to do it a fair bit). Positional play by five-eighthes, hookers, fullbacks to capitalise on off-loads? (Terry Lamb was great at it, so is Matty Bowen for the Cowboys). Phil Gould is always talking about these aspects of the game. So does Peter Sterling. Anyone who takes notice of the game, as opposed to just sitting there in a stupor, is aware of the commentary.

Also, we're pretty sure they're all communist vanguards of the ChiComms here to ruin our way of life and to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

"I’ve been telling the Aussie rules fans..." a lot of stuff that sounds like Oikee twelve glasses into his liquid lunch but not half as friendly! :)

HAHAHA dale thomas, jack riewoldt and brett deledio in the wing and centres. that team would concede 50-60 points just from those three human turnstyles. jarred petrenko, david rodan and patrick dangerfield would be far more solid in defence and overall would contribute more to the team. all of those forwards would get torn to pieces aaron sandilands would be a 7 foot target. dave taylor is the same weight and a foot shorter, much faster and a second rower.

QGIRL, You really should be marketing for the NRL and bring back Tina Turner. Maybe she can sing an NRl song with a broken leg.

I'm awe-struck by the courage of the players. We're talking about men who weigh over 100kgs running into one another at full speed, only to get up as if nothing happened when they're knocked to the ground. I've seen headclashes between massive props that would leave an average man knocked out, yet the props it happened to were on their feet and running, albeit in a sick manner. Players battle on with broken legs, broken arms, broken jaws, broken cheekbones, punctured lungs. You have to admire their toughness, especially during an age when people are wimpier than ever. For every dollar a soccer player earns, a rugby league player should earn $1,000,000. Soccer players just don't deserve the amount of money they're given.

Because he is talking out of his behind. No one ever talks about the tactics etc in league. All the talk is about how 'hard' they all are and how big that last hit was. It's really quite sad

Titus, Titus, Titus enlighten me on how to fix rugby league then since it seems these days 'experts' from other codes think there 2 cents is worth than us leagues so by all means lead us the way to the light. I partially agree on the emphasis on toughness but you do have to consider and with you being an ex-watcher should of know there is a degree of physicality involved and those representing RL in the media very few have actual credibility besides Peter Stirling the rest are just plain awful. Titus if I was to criticize football people for banging about how beautiful the game is I'm sure you provide the same type of retort and then I make baseless assumptions about how this would hold back the QLD/NSW culture around the same lines of your first post of this thread. Of course I don't mean any of this just providing an example that your type of criticism can go both ways but they have one thing in common there opinions not fact. Good night.

I'm sure it can but why do you keep banging on about how tough it is?

"I lost interest in it because it is so limited by this fact, it has very little intelligent analysis, very little style and sophistication " The game play in rugby league can be very complex. The problem is silly people don't have the brains to understand it. It's why they go support soccer.

"Sandilands weighs 122kg, and moves well for a man of his size. I can assure you that he would rarely come off second best, no matter who he ran into." He's get creamed by the 12-year-old halfbacks who play in the Greater Brisbane Junior Rugby League. Aussie rules players just don't have the guts, skill and manliness that is inborn into those kids who play the real code of football, rugby league. :D

"I don’t think any AFL player will be able to slot into 5/8 or halfback. They wouldn’t have the skill set or the knowledge to do it." You know your stuff Socrates. I've been telling the Aussie rules fans on here that the halfbacks and five-eighthes in rugby league have a superior kicking game, more agility, better spatial awareness and the added bonus of having fine motor skills in their hands (something that is foreign to most Aussie rules players) to the blokes who run around in the AFL. A 12-year-old junior rugby league player would be better equipped to play in the NRL than the strongest, fittest, most talented player in the AFL.

This article is not meant to be about AFL players making the transition, it's about those who would have been good if they had played League from an early age - it's a hypothetical.

Yeh, fair enough, Davies' 119kg is close to Sandilands' 122kg - my guess is that Sandilands would be a bit quicker. ps having another look at it - talk about a hospital pass, Davies had barely half a step with the ball before he was collected!
