Wallabies look to Cup with commitment over class

By Argyle / Roar Guru

As I walked out of Suncorp Stadium last night I walked with pride in being Australian, satisifed that the hoo-doo of inconsistency had been broken and that our nemeses from accross the ditch had not only been beaten on the scoreboard but bashed physically and mentally by Horwill’s men.

Of course you hear the XXXX-fuelled “Wallabies you bloody beauty” and the like being yelled out accross the leaving crowd, but generally the Wallaby fans passed each other showing a wry grin and wink that ‘we’ as Wallaby supporters knew somthing special had been achieved.

This was only reinforced by the reactions of the All Black fans I witnessed; grumpy, disappointed. Yep, I know last night hurt the New Zelanders and I don’t give a jot!

Now generally I don’t take enjoyment in others’ defeats. I like New Zealanders. They have given the world much: The All Blacks themselves, Sir Edmund Hillary, the cookie-and-cream cricket uniform, and the tracksuit as a fashion statement.

Yep they have done a lot. However they did not do enough last night and I don’t think they could have done much more and they knew it. They were just plain dusted.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves Australia. We won and deserved to do so by commitment over class. It was evidence from the time the Haka stopped and Australia now famously did not move.

If you looked deeper at McCaw, Afoa and Weepu they did look affronted. This was not to script. Brilliant mental tactics, Australia.

The key to it was mental application of attitude; enter Rocky Elsom, David Pocock, Radike Samo and Ben Alexander, all of whom delivered bone-crunching defence that within twelve minutes.

That saw three uncharacteristic mistakes by the usually unflappable Dan Carter; along with Kieran Read limping off the field; Adam Thompson going for more strapping; and fearless leader Richie McCaw holding his ribs.

The men in black were black and blue themselves and the game had just started.

By now we all know how the game played out. Like the champion team they are, the All Blacks would not lie down. They reverted back to old style route one All Black rugby and threw the kitchen sink at Australia by grinding up the middle and retaining possession, in the natural All Black game.

The grinding, demoralising attrition that has worked so well for them previously was employed with expectation that the same result of victory would ensue, however it was not to be. Australia had had enough.

It has been said by some that this Tri-Nations is devalued and the result of last night’s game would have no bearing come the Rugby World Cup. Rubbish! The only perpetrators of the devaluation were the New Zealanders and South Africans themselves who played ‘B’ teams during the tournament.

It was the Australians who respected the tournament for what it was and deservedly won the cup.

Winning is a habit and breeds confidence. The All Blacks have shown us that for many years. The Wallabies last night showed the rest of the rugby world how to beat New Zealand.

I have no doubt Declan Kidey, Marc Lievremont, Martin Johnson and Peter De Villiers will be studying that tape over and over again. It’s game on, New Zealand, and like the great rugby nation you are, your All Blacks will rise again.

But always in the back of their minds they will know they are not invincible, and their card has been marked. Enter the monkey!

Uncle Arglye, another insightful opinion piece. Remind me to send you a cupcake! I was really stoked to see the win after suffering many Wallabies disappointments both here and abroad. The Blacks will rue some poor missed tackles on Samo and a backrow that was literally smashed out of the game. They did show by taking it up the middle in the 3rd quarter that yards and points are to be had against the Wallabies. Let's hope our boys work out a counter to this as you can be the Paddies will try this all day against us come September 17 in the city of bros.

two wins in tri-nations behind a lot of defeats. Still a long way to go, but agreed they're looking good. Loved the stand up to the Haka - I was egging them on to step forward, but not to be. The more Deans learns from the Reds the better this team gets, but there's some pretty strong forward packs to overcome yet. Yes, NZ is beatable but it's still very hard work. Great tournament ahead.

G'day Warren, No not one of Carter's best game but it shows that he was not really allowed to play well becuase of the pressure he was put under. Great player but also human.

Funny how JOC has slipped off everyone's moral radar and has become the subject of ridicule yet for the last 4 years no-one said anything - did his personality change overnight - I think not. So he is not as bad as everyone is making out or his persoanlity has existed within the wallabies and has been rewarded by Deans - interesting i think as the no frills starch of Faingaa is more effective and predictable and better for a "team"

Uncle I believe the committment in the physical aspect was spot on but the Wallaby ball control and use on attack was superior which lends back to skill. After the ABs had drawn level with two superb tries the Wallabies bounced back with a limited possesion attack which they scored from. Now in the past we would have turned the ball over and the ABs would have scored again and then closed out the match but it was the Wallabies who attacked the AB line, made a gap and scored, almost methodical in the end which was very AB like, Ioanne could have punched for the line but made the try a certainty by passing to Beale. The Wallabies were switched on for the test, took their normal 20m break during a game in the first half of the second half (that still annoys me Robbie!) but showed a maturity and confidence which gave me the most unusual of feelings 10 minutes out from the end, this Wallaby side were not going to be beaten and they played like it whereas the ABs were playing like the old Wallabies, you knew they weren't going to get past the defence although Nonu makes me nervous. The summing up of were the ABs were at on Saturday was when Carter kicked for the touch line with 6minutes to go, why? Had he run out of ideas or was he just not confident in his attack and was hoping for a Wallaby mistake? Not Dan's greates game.

JB, I do beleive in the Wallabies but for too often we have talked up the class in the backline however I reckon it was the Wallabies commitment that won them the game, not their class.

Comittment over class ? That's just downright insulting to the Wallabies. You obviously don't believe in the Wallabies that much. Is that you in disguise Sheek ?
