Rugby World Cup refs told to toughen up

By AP / Wire

International referees boss Paddy O’Brien says the 10 men who will be in charge of Rugby World Cup matches will be told to toughen up in five key areas because “the (referees’) foot has come off the throat.”

O’Brien, the International Rugby Board’s referees manager, said he had noticed a relaxation of standards by Test referees, particularly around the offside line and at the tackled ball.

He said the IRB was determined the tournament, which starts next Friday, would deliver a better spectacle than the last which was dominated by kicking and defence.

But O’Brien’s comments to the New Zealand Herald have awoken disquiet among fans and commentators that rugby’s showcase tournament may again be dominated by overzealous refereeing.

Why is anyone surprised that Wayne Barnes can't police the offside line with his terrible positioning? Somebody tell the best on the world that he shouldn't jog backwards into a defender.

Who do you support Jason? It can't be the Wallabies cause anyone who supports a team with Will Genia & Quade Cooper couldn't be complaining about forward passes...

Ha ha ha, well not really to be honest Uncle, the teams that we do manage to scrape together here are mostly expats like myself from NZ, UK, Australia and South Africa, even the odd American. Those that do play and support are a dedicated bunch to say the least, travelling to games is expensive and time consuming, and let's not mention the weather, training is often held indoors due to snow. It's all in good fun and one would be forgiven in saying that the spirit of the game is alive and well here.

Chuck, For what its worth, there does seem to be another "Mike" who posts on Roar. But that shouldn't matter anyway - rather than making a (by now rather lengthy) stream of ad hominem comments, better to deal with the issues.

And the self righteous knight in shining armour comes riding into the forum again. Mike you are not the saint that you proclaim yourself to be, far from it in fact. There are countless posts from you on this site and on this very thread where you simply indulge in petty provocatism looking for reactions from people, you then try and take the moral high ground by insinuating you actually come in here and discuss the points when in actuality it is far rom the truth. Don't bother replying to my post as I really can not be bothered with you, and take your posts with a grain of salt.

I think this is worth a look for anyone who needs proof of AB's permanent infringing habits.... actually one should also mention the huge amount of kiwi "flat passes' ( ie FORWARD) that they get away with because of the refs not being able to keep up.

"Want to keep picking an argument Mike? Or are you done?" I will write what I think, and if that happens to be different to your point of view, and you call that 'picking an argument', then so be it. "@ Mike, or who ever you are" - What on earth does this mean? "you can’t see any repetetive comments?" No, I can't - noting that that comment was directed to your response to Peter K, not Matthew Skellet. The basis of your complaint appears to be that some people disagree with you - that makes you as "repetitive" as they! "If you browse this site regularly, like myself, then you will certainly notice the annoying same old tired lines of argument from the same old unimaginitive posters. ie; PeterK." All that is saying is that you disagree with him. From another perspective, your lines of argument are just as "old tired" and just as "same old unimaginative" as those you disagree with!

Most amusing Chuck - you complain that someone else is "only here to pick fights" and in the very next sentence you indulge in pointless ad hominem comment. 'nuff said. As for 'participating in the discussion', if you or Matt want to make it a discussion by actually *engaging* with the points made by others, then I am more than happy to participate. Unfortunately too often we seem to be seeing comments at the level of "repetitive rubbish", "numpty", "load of old bollocks", "same old dribble" etc. By all means make such comments if that is the best you can manage, but don't dignify it with the title of 'discussion'!

@ Mike, or who ever you are, you can't see any repetetive comments? Can't see why Skellett may be trolling? Open your one eye champ, actually read the comments, classic trolling, definition -'Troll (Internet), an internet term for a person who, through willful action, attempts to disrupt a community or garner attention and controversy through provocative messages.' "Except your suggestion that the existence of posts that disagree with yours", what are you talking about? Where did I suggest that the existence of posts that disagree with mine will be the death of this site? Who If you would like me to draw you a picture in crayon as to what I meant, no problem. If you browse this site regularly, like myself, then you will certainly notice the annoying same old tired lines of argument from the same old unimaginitive posters. ie; PeterK. Then you have the posters that straight out just want to cause a stir and see how much of a reaction they can get, generally these people are not all that interested in our great game and are not especially knowledgeable in the rules of said game either. The latter are easily spotted due to their outlandish claims and strange statistics, ie; Mr Skellett. It is when this type of troll post starts to become the norm that people leave and look elsewhere for their rugby news and views. Personally I do love the Roar, there are some intelligent characters posting and the banter for the most part is intelligent and witty, however as I mention certain posters need to change their record. Want to keep picking an argument Mike? Or are you done?
