Bring back Gordon Bray

By Rugby Diehard / Roar Rookie

Gordon Bray, the greatest commentator the world has ever seen, is a rugby man for all seasons, all grades and all nations.

A man whose love of the game so outweighs his love of competition that the competition doesn’t seem to matter so much anymore.

Rugby people everywhere are sick of the stereotyped former player commentators who think their job starts when they arrive at the ground and ends at the post match interview.

I expect more. I want to know that the Namibian reserve hooker’s mother’s family grew up in Angola on a disused nuclear test site and that the Japanese manager was on a plane trip that went down in central Africa in 1972 and that he spent 18 months recuperating with an unknown Congolese midget tribe that believed he was Adroa, the God in the Sky.

I don’t want to hear from a former Australian hooker that Richie McCaw is the biggest cheat on the planet, I want to be told that he learnt his stealth skills from his Royal New Zealand Air Force grandfather who used to fly night raids during World War II to supply vital munitions and rations to guerrilla German troops who operated right under the watchful eye of the referee… errrr… I mean commandant.

We don’t want commentators to state the obvious – we can all watch the television. We don’t want technical expertise – Kafe can give us that.

What we want is an unbiased passion for the game, we want excitement, we want a guy who can make a 120 kg Samoan prop gentle, or an Englishman likeable and exciting, but what we really want to know is what makes the players we’re watching full of courage or spite or tenacity or good humour or whatever it is that they’re full of.

Gordon Bray, we want you.

Gordon Bray is the best commentator ???? lol BS John Eales is the man for the job he is fair and says it as he sees it....I get sick oh hearing Gordan winge about other countries yet when Australia does it he either never sees it or he say bad luck but if anyone else pushes the boundaries of the rules he goes on and on and on.....Commentators arent suppose to be bias but like John Eales does says it as he sees it...

Bring back Gordy ! Australia needs you. The first man to make the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race an exciting sporting event may be able to save rugby from oblivion . He should be the voice of rugby !!

Gordon Bray as far as i am concerned is the and will always be the voice of rugby. The commentators fox fox are so boring and they don't offer the insight into the game that Gordon does, i normal mute the sound during the game, however now that Gordon has been calling some of the RWC games i have been listening. I hope that Gordon gets to keep calling games.

McLaren didn't know jack. I remember his going into paroxysms of superlatives merely because, solicitor C.M.H. Gibson M.B.E. (NIFC, Cambridge University, Ulster, Ireland B&! Lions) who had crossed the opponents try line midway between the posts and corner improved the chances of a conversion by coming round and placing the ball down under the posts. I thought at the time that had any schoolboy rugby league player failed to try to do the same he would have got at least an earful if not a thick ear from his team's goal kicker. Bill was a shill for the 15 a side game in general and the Rugby Union (rather than the SRU) in particular

Thought I would clarify; wrote above in hurry. In NZ we are getting mostly NZ commentators. That’s how it should be and sometimes guest commentators who know the overseas team that is playing – can be informative. Don’t think AU fox has guest commentators at all, their all AUs. I thoroughly object to Gordon Bray hosting the NZ commentary. He has done so, twice now, once for the WB game and then for Namibia/Samoa. He spoke trivia, what we can clearly see, all over the picture, rarely a break. Apart from excitement (he just speaks louder) his voice shows no emotion, complete turn off. Gordon Bray hates the ABs, during his commentary days every time the ABs were mentioned he would bring up the Meads/Catchpole incident (not on air). A shameful AB incident, alright, but not constantly every time a NZ side is mentioned. It never stopped, and here he is hosting NZ commentary at NZs WC. I am talking about the actual commentary over the game being played, not pre or post comments. The NZ commentary should be hosted by a NZ commentator. No problem with a guest commentator (fine) to inform about the overseas team, but not GB for the WBs. Farr-Jones would be better bet, plenty of others. About the NZ commentators; they are passable, and my opinion, less objectionable to AU fox commentary. Mexted and Smith are not my favourites. I am not interested in listening to their politics or derivations that reveal an unenlightened point of view. Their rugby opinions are good though. As Katherine below indicates like the rules and the refs interpretation explained. Don’t like them to ignore or be patronising to another commentators comments – a NZ thing in my opinion. Enjoy them sticking to the game and confronting each other when they disagree - like that. Problem with NZers; they don’t often confront so the NZ crew need to surpass themselves. Got to say that I think the UK commentators have a professional edged over all the others. They know how to present a civilised commentary even if their rugby opinions are not always up to speed,

Please bring back unbiased intelligent commentary about the game strategy and skills involved. So many times I sit with people who ask "why are they doing that or why is the ref doing this." Informative commentary about aspects of the game will improve the appeal of the contest. Rather than the dribble we currently get from biased explayers who have forgotten they played a different game 20 years ago when it wasn't a professional sport.

Seems the majority here would love to see Gordon Bray back in regular rugby commentary, and I certainly agree. We got Horwill as captain, should be a walk in the park getting Gordon up ;)

OK plenty of AUs on here 'love' Gordon Bray. Fine. But you keep him off the NZ Fox commentary. This guy is ruining my WC. If the game is on Maori TV I go there, but NZ is the first country to go against the IRB ruling and not have every game on Free To Air. He is appalling. Crams every second with opinionated trivia in that thin whine of a voice. As I have stated before AUs might like their rugby commentary to tell them what they can clearly see: Don't expect Murdoch to respect NZs WC and use NZers as host commentator. As for the WB games there are plenty of 'qualified' AUs as guest AU commentor.

Gordon is to rugby as Benaud is to cricket, a truly classical commentator. We need him back - I just love to hear his concise, accurate and authoritative commentary! BRING BACK THE BRAY!!!

Gordon is the voice of Australian rugby. His commitment to the game and to bringing some colour to the broadcast set him apart like Bill Mclaren, Murray Walker or Phil Leggit. I had given up on this RWC and decided to just watch the semis but hearing him on Fox got me back to the broadcast for the minor games. Keep it up Gordy and lets hope Fox take the game's broadcast fans seriously enough to keep him on the team.
